Reminds me of the under-appreciated, underrated Kevin Bacon film “Tremors”.

Unlike earthquakes, tremors occur deeper below the surface and the shaking lasts longer.

During the study period, two strong earthquakes hit — a magnitude-6.5 in 2003 and a magnitude-6.0 a year later. Scientists noticed the frequency of the tremors doubled after the 2003 quake and jumped six-fold after 2004.

Tremor episodes persist today. Though the frequency of tremors have declined since 2004, scientists are still concerned because they are still at a level that is twice as high as before the 2003 quake.

The team also recorded unusually strong rumblings days before the 2004 temblor

If I remember my geology reading, where the Fault goes through California, it is a side-by-side, so there is no chance of CA breaking off and falling into the Ocean.

The Fault, however, stretches north all the way to Seattle, running through the Puget Sound, where it is an over-and-under.

When the Cascadia Fault goes it could trigger the S.A. Fault, and Seattle would pretty much be a ruined city. I think the last time the Cascadia Fault gave way, 5 feet of landline was submerged and it created a tsunami that hit Japan.

It would be nice if we could evacuate any FReepers and other right minded folks, then let the God forsaken state fall off into the ocean.

It would literally be analogous to culling a dead limb on a tree as far as the country is concerned....

The upside is that if California falls into the ocean it won’t catch fire this year.

But some think the deep tremors suggest underground stress may be building up faster than expected and may indicate an increased risk of a major temblor.

Which also means it might not indicate either.

If you think a lot of folks are walking away from their mortgages due to the economy, just wait till 100’s of thousands of them are damaged or destroyed in quakes.

Even the “San Andreas Fault” is getting tired of hearing about Mikey Jackson.

Love Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Bound By Wild Desire
I Fell Into A Ring Of Fire

CHORUS:
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

The Taste Of Love Is Sweet
When Hearts Like Ours Meet
I Fell For You Like A Child
Oh, But The Fire Went Wild

CHORUS
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

And It Burns, Burns, Burns

The Ring Of Fire

The Ring Of Fire

How can tremors be mysterious in an earthquake area? All I have to worry about here in PA is whether to sleep with the window open or closed tonight.

I forget what AC is like. (Hear that Al?)

Parkfield is at the northern end of a locked segment of the San Andreas Fault (SAF) that, in 1857, ruptured south from Monarch Peak (MP) in the great 7.8 magnitude Ft. Tejon quake. As a result of nearby earthquakes in 2003 and 2004, tremors developed under Cholame and Monarch Peak. The black dots pinpoint 1250 well-located tremors. The square boxes are 30 kilometers (19 miles) on a side.

Color contours give regional shear-stress change at 20 km depth from the Parkfield earthquake (green segment) along the SAF. The thrust-type San Simeon earthquake rupture is represented by the gray rectangle and line with triangles labeled SS. The currently locked Cholame segment is about 63 km long (solid portion of the arrow) and is believed capable of rupturing on its own in a magnitude 7 earthquake. The gray lines within the Cholame box bound the west quadrant, where quasiperiodic episodes predominate. (Robert Nadeau/UC Berkeley)

The seismic record of an earthquake consists of an initial P wave and bigger S wave, with vibrations tapering off in less than a minute. Tremors are a constant rumbling, like a continuous 0.5 magnitude earthquake, that can go on for 20 minutes or more. (Robert Nadeau/UC Berkeley)

UC Berkley News

"...We've shown that earthquakes can stimulate tremors next to a locked zone, but we don't yet have evidence that this tells us anything about future quakes," Nadeau said. "But if earthquakes trigger tremors, the pressure that stimulates tremors may also stimulate earthquakes."
