Mysterious tremors detected on San Andreas Fault... (Ring of Fire very Active!)
AP ^ | July 9th, 2009

LOS ANGELES – Scientists have detected a spike in underground rumblings on a section of California's San Andreas Fault that produced a magnitude-7.8 earthquake in 1857.

What these mysterious vibrations say about future earthquakes is far from certain. But some think the deep tremors suggest underground stress may be building up faster than expected and may indicate an increased risk of a major temblor.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, monitored seismic activity on the fault's central section between July 2001 and February 2009 and recorded more than 2,000 tremors. The tremors lasted mere minutes to nearly half an hour.

Unlike earthquakes, tremors occur deeper below the surface and the shaking lasts longer.

Tremors is a movie I've seen at least a dozen times. Call me bored, call me sick, call me a simpleton but when it comes on I watch it from start to finish.

Love Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Bound By Wild Desire
I Fell Into A Ring Of Fire

CHORUS:
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

The Taste Of Love Is Sweet
When Hearts Like Ours Meet
I Fell For You Like A Child
Oh, But The Fire Went Wild

CHORUS
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

And It Burns, Burns, Burns

The Ring Of Fire

The Ring Of Fire

How can tremors be mysterious in an earthquake area? All I have to worry about here in PA is whether to sleep with the window open or closed tonight.

I forget what AC is like. (Hear that Al?)

“Tremors” is Reba's highlight as far as I'm concerned. I wish my wife was more like her.

Parkfield is at the northern end of a locked segment of the San Andreas Fault (SAF) that, in 1857, ruptured south from Monarch Peak (MP) in the great 7.8 magnitude Ft. Tejon quake. As a result of nearby earthquakes in 2003 and 2004, tremors developed under Cholame and Monarch Peak. The black dots pinpoint 1250 well-located tremors. The square boxes are 30 kilometers (19 miles) on a side.

Color contours give regional shear-stress change at 20 km depth from the Parkfield earthquake (green segment) along the SAF. The thrust-type San Simeon earthquake rupture is represented by the gray rectangle and line with triangles labeled SS. The currently locked Cholame segment is about 63 km long (solid portion of the arrow) and is believed capable of rupturing on its own in a magnitude 7 earthquake. The gray lines within the Cholame box bound the west quadrant, where quasiperiodic episodes predominate. (Robert Nadeau/UC Berkeley)

The seismic record of an earthquake consists of an initial P wave and bigger S wave, with vibrations tapering off in less than a minute. Tremors are a constant rumbling, like a continuous 0.5 magnitude earthquake, that can go on for 20 minutes or more. (Robert Nadeau/UC Berkeley)

UC Berkley News

"...We've shown that earthquakes can stimulate tremors next to a locked zone, but we don't yet have evidence that this tells us anything about future quakes," Nadeau said. "But if earthquakes trigger tremors, the pressure that stimulates tremors may also stimulate earthquakes."

People have been talking about THE BIG ONE for years hitting California. If THE BIG ONE hits then the first thing we must do is not panic. In fact, panic in any natural disaster is the worst thing anybody can do. You try to stay calm and act rationally in the event of a natural disaster. You do your best to prepare for them as if they are imminent.

Nu the way, has anybody checked our what Lex Luthor is up to?

I suggested evacuating FReepers and other 'right minded' people first.
