G8 summit: Sarah Brown and Michelle Obama visit L'Aquila... but no sign of Carla Bruni

The visit of the leaders' wives was supposed to be the highlight of the G8 summit for the people of L'Aquila.

But as Sarah Brown and Michelle Obama arrived to tour round historic buildings damaged in this year's earthquake, the question on everyone's lips was about the wife that wasn't there.

As the British and US first ladies chatted like old friends on the second day of the summit, there was still no sign of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

The absence of the French first lady raised speculation last night that she had delayed her arrival because of her dislike of Silvio Berlusconi.

Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy, who was born in Italy but whose family moved to France in the 1970s, has made no secret of her disapproval of the Italian prime minister, of whom she said last year: "I haven't felt good since he was re-elected prime minister."

She also took a swipe at the 72-year-old Italian leader when he complimented President Barack Obama on his "suntan", saying the remark made her glad she had become a French citizen.

She finally arrived in L'Aquila last night, hours after the tour had finished, and she was expected to attend a formal G8 leaders dinner with her husband, and go on a private tour of the quake area today (fri).

A French source at the summit said: "It's well known that Carla can't stand Berlusconi. She wanted to stay as far away from him as possible."

Earlier in the day, Mrs Brown and Mrs Obama were shown the rubble-strewn heart of L'Aquila.

EXCERPTS:

"Mrs Obama, with her hair swept back and wearing a yellow and white cardigan over a white dress, saw the shattered dome of the 18th-century Sant'Agostino church in the Piazza del Duomo."

"Mrs Brown, wearing a sleeveless grey dress and a multicoloured bead necklace, said: "The full scale of the devastation really hits you when you see such beautiful buildings full of cracks and surrounded by crumbling stones."

"The pair were steered well clear of a group of women who were made homeless by the earthquake and who staged a protest in which they held up banners describing themselves as "Last Ladies".

The spouses were accompanied by Italy's glamorous minister for equal opportunities, former topless model Mara Carfagna, who was picked by Mr Berlusconi as a chaperone in the absence of his wife, who is divorcing him."

Thats probably what it was. She didn't go with the wives because she doesn't like Silvio. Who wasn't there.

I love this:

"A few miles away, in the mountain village of San Demetrio, George Clooney was taken on a tour of earthquake damage.

The actor, who has a house on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy, was joined by his friend Bill Murray, the star of Lost in Translation, to open a new cinema near a campsite for homeless earthquake survivors.

Clooney and Murray opening a brand new cinema right next to the homeless earthquake survivors! Who directed this scene, the Farrelly brothers? I can see Bill Murray telling them how bad he feels but they still need a ticket, while Clooney steps out of the air-conditioned lobby to toss them some JuJuBees from the candy counter.

Bruni is known in France as a notorious reverse-racist. She is obsessed with "colored" minority rights and special privileges.

This made me laugh out loud. Tragedy or comedy?
