The best theory I heard blamed it on air conditioning. It used to be that people ate less in the hot months. Now, with a/c, they eat that same southern diet year round.

It’s hot in Southern California too. And we drive everywhere in air conditioned cars. But body image is everything here. I suspect that when your neighbors are all fat, there’s just less peer pressure to stay thin, so the percentage of fat people keeps going up.
