A fresh wave of cyber attacks that slowed U.S. and South Korean websites this week hit more targets on Thursday, a Web security firm said, while the South's spy agency has said the hacking may be linked to North Korea.
The impact of the attacks, aimed so far at dozens of sites including the White House and the South's presidential office, was seen as negligible, experts said, but served as a reminder that Pyongyang has been planning for cyber warfare.

I wonder how much help they are getting from enemy infiltrators within our government.
dont we have some nerds in the basement that can fight back and take north korea offline?
Didn't you get the memo?
This is why we need an Internet czar
I doubt we could take the entire country offline. The systems attacking the web sites are mostly people’s home computers who got infected by clicking the links on the spam emails advertising winning lotteries, Viagra and questionable pr0n.
Public relations and efficiency - public relations to ensure they build up public support which can translate to budget dollars, and to transact routine business. Just like private industry, getting the public to transact business over the Internet, or making non-classified materials available cuts down on the manpower required to handle FOIA requests and such.
I am confident that the systems on the Internet are isolated from the systems that are internal to the organization and do the real work. Data may be passed from the Internet to the internal systems, but generally only in highly structured ways that can be scanned and verified.
This should be the least of your worries - an employee walking out with a disc full of data poses a greater danger.
Ditto. You can rest assured that when it comes to the really important systems there is an “air gap” between the networks, meaning that in order for something to go between them, someone has to walk it there and load it by hand.
NK can’t do much without PRC support.
What type of attacks are these? From the WH to the Wash Compost.... Are they being hacked with words or just infiltrated or both?
Then why do we see reports about classified data being mined from our military?
Of course, I agree, laptops, etc. are a huge problem.
The ones I’ve seen are pretty straight-forward DDoS: infected computers dump garbage data at a site killing its ability to receive incoming requests.
Apparently there are other more sophisticated attacks on some government sites. Once they hit the banking sector, as has been threatened, I should get a better look at the sophistry (or lack thereof) of the attack.
I would say it more likely a disgruntled South Korean.. but I could be wrong.
We need to take these fellows down a few pegs. We should launch a cyber attack that would resemble our Shock and Awe in Iraq. That or give them a good old fashioned ultimatum.
Give up our two reporters in 72 hours or a state of war will exist between our two states. Have Obama go to Congress and ask for an official declaration of war. Then blockade them, launch strikes at their nuclear plants, rocket launching bases, and mine their ports. If they want to attack South Korea, they can and add them to the war. Invade, take down the dictator and join the two koreas once and for all—OR Let the Chinese have North Korea—they could run it better than the sick cabal that is calling the shots now. We should have ended this in the 1950s. When you don’t solve a problem—it will just come back and bite you in the a**.
