British scientists have created human sperm using stem cells in a medical first that could revolutionise fertility treatment, they claim.

Researchers at the pioneering Northeast England Stem Cell Institute say they have made the breakthrough using stem cells from an embryo.

They have made the breakthrough using stem cells from an embryo.

They claim that with some minor changes the sperm could theoretically fertilise an egg to create a child.

Within 10 years, the scientists say the technique could also be used to allow infertile couples to have children that are genetically their own. It could even be possible to create sperm from female stem cells, they say, which would ultimately mean a woman having a baby without a man.

This is the first time human sperm has been created anywhere in the world in a laboratory. However, the experiment has proved controversial, threatening to reopen the fierce debate over embryo research.

KEYWORDS:
Possibly a future cure for male infertility caused by cancer treatment or disease? While I don't agree with the destruction of embryos through experimentation for religious/ethical reasons, as someone who dealt with infertility for decades before God blessed our family, I found this quote appalling: "I think that sometimes we have to stop meddling and accept infertility." You could put ANYTHING in the place of 'infertility', i.e. "I think that sometimes we have to stop meddling and accept total paralysis" or "I think that sometimes we have to stop meddling and accept Alzheimer's disease" or "I think that sometimes we have to stop and accept Muscular Dystrophy in children"-- after all these years and all the technological advances in the field of infertility, and there's STILL bias against people who simply want to have their own biological child. :-( There are MANY infertility treatments that do not require experimentation or destruction of embryos to be successful.

Waiting now for the religious Luddites to hijack this post in 3...2...1...as always, personal attacks will be noted and ignored.

Would this not mean a women could give up an embryo, its stem cells used to create sperm cells and those sperms cells used to fertilize the woman’s eggs thus making her both mother and father to the resulting child?

If it needs “changes” then it is no yet sperm is it?

“Theoretically” - means it is not working.
