US To Push Stricter Sanctions On Iran

The United States will call for "even stricter sanctions on Iran to try to change the behavior of the regime," US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a TV interview broadcast late Tuesday.

Washington remained concerned about what Clinton called Iran's "pursuit of nuclear weapons," which could "be very destabilizing in the Middle East and beyond," Clinton told the private Venezuelan television network Globovision.

This contradicts earlier reports that the US would oppose tougher sanctions on Iran at the upcoming G8 summit. I'm not sure if it really matters either way, since the sanctions have not done anything to stop Iran to this point. Further muddying of the waters from JCOS chairman, Admiral Mike Mullen....

Earlier Tuesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said Iran was "very focused on developing [nuclear weapons] capability, and I think when they get it, or should they get it, it will be very destabilizing."

However, Mullen was similarly grim on the prospects that Iran's nuclear weapons program might be attacked preemptively, saying such an attack on Iran would be similarly destabilizing, as in both cases, "there are unintended consequences that are very difficult to predict in a very volatile, highly volatile part of the world."

OK, now really.....someone needs to make the decision: Either you want a destabilized situation from a nuclear armed Iran or the non-nuclear Iran. Seems pretty clear to me, but what the hell do I know?

Yup, sanctions are definitely the way to go. I mean, they’ve never worked in the past but hey, whatever.

If the right people are in charge, the sanctions will work.

(Where have I heard something like that before? Oh yeah, about socialism. But they are doing that also. We in deep trouble.)

How does this statement square with O’ statement that he and Russia are against any further sanctions on Iran.

Seems everyone in his administration is freelancing, or is it by design that they always lie lie and lie some more.
