Yes, I think that's right. But, I looked around (albeit briefly), and couldn't find any defamation suits brought by elected officials that have concluded with an affirmative jury verdict or judgment.

I would add that while the Enquirer and others have been successfully sued, the failed lawsuits far outnumber the successful lawsuits - at least for monetary damages. And, this is what these tabloids do to sell papers, they engage in alleged libel with virtually every story.

With all the hassle that goes along with civil suits, including intrusive discovery motions and hours of depositions, for Palin, I just don't think she'd be wise to pursue this course of action.
