Cap-and-suppress
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | July 6, 2009 | Editorial

NASA's James Hansen became an instant folk hero among global warmists and "journalists" and a poster child for government censorship after he claimed the Bush administration had suppressed and rewritten his research on "climate change." It is unlikely the Environmental Protection Agency's Alan Carlin and John Davidson will be so deified for suffering the same treatment at the hands of their bosses and President Obama.

Under the direction of the White House and under a virtual media blackout, the EPA is quashing an internal study by Messrs. Carlin and Davidson that criticizes the agency's warmist agenda as dangerously dated and inflexible. The Competitive Enterprise Institute short circuited the EPA by releasing the March 9 report (http://cei .org/cei_files/fm/active/0/DOC062509-004.pdf) by Messrs. Carlin and Davidson of the Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation, an arm of the EPA's National Center for Environmental Economics.

Their report scored the agency for uncritically accepting the politicized findings of warmists and ignoring recent developments in climate science that cast serious doubt on the warming theory. Those developments include the 1 C decline in global temperatures since 1998, even as atmospheric CO2 has continued to increase and CO2 emissions have accelerated, and new research proving water vapor will moderate, rather than exacerbate, temperatures.

The report is being suppressed because the White House — so much for transparency — wants the public to support its power-grabbing and liberty-stealing agenda for rationing greenhouse-gas emissions. The administration doesn't want Americans to know that scientific evidence now suggests what warming skeptics have been saying all along: that predictable solar and ocean cycles best explain temperature fluctuations. Moreover, the report said, "Given the downward trend in temperatures since 1998 (which some think will continue until 2030) there is no particular reason to rush into decisions based on a scientific hypothesis that does not appear to explain most of the available data."

Which is why President Obama and the Democrats are rushing their blatantly socialistic and massively expensive cap-and-trade bill through Congress. They want it to become law before the global-warming theory unravels completely. So if Americans don't speak up now, they will be saddled with this multitrillion-dollar monstrosity that purports to solve a problem that doesn't exist.
