EU's Barroso seeks two degrees Celsius pact at G8

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Monday he will press the United States and other nations to limit global warming to no more than 2 degrees Celsius at this week's Group of Eight summit.

The United States, Japan, Russia and Canada have yet to be convinced that a 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) limit -- favored by European G8 nations Germany, Britain, France and Italy -- is the necessary threshold beyond which climate change will reach danger levels.

But Barroso said he would "stress the importance of the science and remaining within a 2 degrees temperature rise" when he meets his G8 counterparts and leaders of developed and emerging economies at the three-day summit from Wednesday.

"We go to L'Aquila with a number of key objectives. We will insist on the need to respect the 2 degrees Celsius target," Barroso told a news conference ahead of the summit in the Italian city devastated by an earthquake in April.

Barroso said he would also push for an agreement by the 17-member Major Economies Forum (MEF) on the sidelines of the G8 summit to "reiterate the need for a global goal of achieving at least a 50 percent reduction of global emissions by 2050."

"This in turn means that developed countries must reduce emissions by at least 80 percent in the same period and underpin these efforts through robust and comparable mid-term reductions," he said.

This shouldn't be too hard since the Earth's temperature has not even gone up a single celsius degree during the entire history of industrial civilization.

If we had implemented Kyoto in 1997, the enviros would be pointing to the global cooling as proof that it worked.

They know that we aren’t warming, and they need to enact legislation quickly so they can pretend they fixed it.

It’s like the guy who says he can keep elephants out of his back yard, when there are no elephants on the continent.

These people are on LSD or something stronger - I plan on limiting the wind speed around here to 30 knots or less.

It would be cheaper to clone Al Gore and have the clones attend anti-global warming conferences around the world. He could get a blizzard in July when he’s discussing the dangers of global warming.

Measured temperature increase right now (June, 2009) is 0.0 C increase from 1979 through 2009, according to UA Huntsville satellite measurements.

Shouldn’t be too hard to limit AGW to 2.0 degrees increase.

(Now, about that upcoming Ice Age we are overdue for ....)

The nutjobs continue to prove that they live in the past. The earth’s temperature has DECREASED since 1998. Even the UN’s IPCC has had to acknowledge that the earth is not warming!!

When do the SANE people get to smack the insane Gorebots down??? I’m PAST ready!!

An earlier post linked to a graph that showed a net temp change of “0” over the last 30 years. Sweet! We’re done! Next problem??

We could cool the climate by helping mother nature make more sun reflecting clouds over the open ocean. There are fewer clouds offshore because waves don’t crash as much, making for less salt nucleotides for water vapor to start condensing on. Spray saltwater somehow and the climate will be cooler.

Why stop there? Why not legislate that every citizen of the world has a natural human right to have his or her own personal “personal climate zone” and create the system that will allow us all to have whatever climate we wish to have surrounding our immediate area at all times?

It should only take a few quadrillion or so in tax increases. Go big or go home.

They ought to repeal the Law of Gravity while they’re at it. I’ve never really been happy with it.
