The armed forces in Honduras have closed the Jesuit-run Radio Progreso, following the ousting of President Manuel Zelaya last month. The military - backed by Congress and the courts - forced Mr Zelaya out of Honduras on 28 June over his plans to hold a vote on possible constitutional change. However, Radio Progreso is still operating on line at radioprogresohn.com where you can also see videos of the military invasion of the radio station and Fr Ismael Moreno SJ, the Director of Radio Progreso, agreeing to close the station down to avoid further confrontation.
Ged Clapson, Communications Officer of the British Jesuits who sent these reports, writes: "Please remember the people of Honduras including the Jesuits of the Central American Province in your prayers."
A statement issued on Saturday by the Honduran Bishops Conference follows below.
This statement of the Honduran Bishops Conference, dated July 3, 2009, was read on national television in Honduras, by Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez Maradiaga, SDB, in the morning of July 4, 2009.
Building from crisis
2. In the face of the situation of the last few days, we refer to the information which we have sought in the appropriate public records of the State (the Supreme Court of Justice, the National Congress, the Public Ministry, the Executive Power [Branch], the Supreme Electoral Tribunal) and many organizations of civil society. Each and every one of the documents which have come into our hands show that the institutions of the Honduran democratic state are valid and that what it has executed in juridical-legal matters has been rooted in law. The three powers of the State Executive, Legislative, and Judicial are legally and democratically valid in accord with the Constitution of the Republic of Honduras.

Would you read over the full bishops’ statement and comment, please?
ping your lists? I am interested in Catholics’ take on all this
They didn’t shut down a Catholic radio station, they shut down a Communist radio station, pretending to be Catholic.
There was some leftwing Nicarauguan catholic priest accompanying the wannabe dictator on that venezuelan plane trying to land yesterday
The Catholic Church may be on the right side, but the local Jesuits probably are communist. Liberation theology originated in Central America.
Yes and the Jesuits at “Radio Progreso” are on the wrong side. No doubt a ‘liberation theology’ outpost that has never ceased preaching the Catholic/Marxist hybrid doctrine.

The Catholic priests and bishops in Central America have for many years been progressively Marxist, going back to the days of Ortega. The take some loosely based scripture to support their position and movements, but it’s out of context. Yes, the Bible does say to give to the poor. And yes, the Disciples did live in community after Christ died and ascended to Heaven. BUT, the Bible doe NOT say to do these things under the threat of military force or governmental persecution. In spite of what our secular brethern (and sisters) want to make us believe, Christ was NOT a community organizer. As a matter of fact, he spoke out against those in power during his time. He didn’t preach to take your brothers wealth to give to someone else. He taught to serve the poor with your own pocessions and time according to your heart.
I graduated from a Jesuit college some years ago. I knew the Jesuits ran schools, but I was unaware that they had diversified into operating radio stations. When did that happen?
I’ve lived in Central America (we have a house in El Salvador) and I have NEVER met a Jesuit in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras or Nicaragua who was not a Marxist. Even the 2 Latin American Jesuits I know personally here in the US are steeped in liberation theology. The teachers of liberation theology are as much responsible for the suffering and destruction of Central America as their ‘secular’ Commie compadres. Back in the early and mid 80’s, 3 successive parish priests let my in-laws know, in no uncertain terms, that they were not welcome to Mass because they were land owners.
The Congress and the courts - backed by the military - forced Mr Zelaya out of Honduras
I don’t have time to google it for you, but for starters, I know of one here in the US (Rosebud Reservation, SD).
Continent-wide, the reds are attempting to stamp out Catholicism and freedom throughout Latin America which otherwise, along with Africa, promises to be most fertile ground for future Catholic growth. The reds are no more eager to see Evangelical and/or Pentecostal growth in Latin America.
Today's red Jebbies, eager handmaidens of the radical left, are trying to restore Honduras's wannabe president for life. They also probably have a love affair with Ugo Chavez, Fidel, Raul, red Danny Ortega and a host of other enemies of the Church and of Western Civilization.
Enough! If Zelaya tries again to return by plane, the Honduran military should shoot down the plane, regardless of who else may be on board. Send Zelaya to the same place that Allende went.
I think the Catholic Church needs to pick a side.
What is truly amazing to me is that Liberation Theology is based on a millennialist reading of Revelations. Millennialism has been officially classified as heresy in the Catholic church since the twelfth century.
This Catholic’s take on this is the legitimate government impeached and removed a criminal from office. I don’t know about this radio station, but my guess is that it was carrying water for the leftists.
Sadly, there are Catholic priests and leaders who are socialists, and reject the very fundamental teachings of the faith. Why Rome doesn’t boot them is beyond me.
Without more facts about this station and the “catholics” behind it, I tend to believe the military acted justly to take out a socialist/communist backed propoganda station. And like the removal of the “president” did so with congressional and court order and backing.
The worst idea that has infiltrated the western catholic church is “social justice”.
“First they came for the Jews and I did nothing......etc!”
