In a gesture of charity, the Canadian government has released the Republic of Haiti of its entire $2.3-million debt to Canada, Jim Flaherty, the finance minister said Thursday.
The move, a part of the Canadian Debt Initiative, brings the total debt of impoverished countries cancelled by Canada to $965-million, including debt owed by Latin American and Caribbean nations.
"Todays announcement frees up valuable financial resources that can be better spent on Haitis priorities, not its liabilities," Mr. Flaherty said. "At a time of unprecedented hardship in the global economy, Canada continues to eliminate financial burdens faced by Haiti and other nations as they take the steps needed to strengthen their economies."
Haiti is the 13th country to meet the requirements of the Canadian Debt Initiative, designed to forgive $1.3-billion in debt.

Wow! They must be rich!
Why don’t they collect from Haiti’s co-signers (the Liberal party).
LOL! The Canadian government?
So does that mean that government employess are going to pony up that $2.3 million bucks, or is that being paid by the good taxpaying citizens of Canada?
That’s a lot of loonies.
All the way! Great analogy.
I despise this that governments take money from their people in forced taxation, give it to some other country and they hardworking people of the host country get nothing.
..what they get is boatloads of lower than lowlife twoleggeds who refuse to leg up a superior culture, rather strive to infect the misery they escaped on the unsuspecting hardworking citizens who unwittingly allowed the infection in the firstplace.
