URUMQI, China Violent street battles killed at least 140 people and injured 828 others in the deadliest ethnic unrest to hit China's volatile western Xinjiang region in decades, and officials said Monday the death toll was expected to rise.
Security forces have clamped down on the city of Urumqi and set up checkpoints to catch any fleeing rioters, state media reported, after tensions between ethnic Muslim Uighur people and China's Han majority erupted into riots.
Rioters on Sunday overturned barricades, attacking vehicles and houses, and clashed violently with police, according to media and witness accounts. State television aired footage showing protesters attacking and kicking people on the ground. Other people, who appeared to be Han Chinese, sat dazed with blood pouring down their faces.
There was little immediate explanation for how so many people died. The government blamed Uighur exiles for stoking the unrest. Exile groups said the violence started only after police began violently cracking down on a peaceful protest.

Muslim’s involved in violence? That just can’t be right............................................
Religious control freaks fighting government control freaks. Unfortunately, regular people are caught in between.
Let’s see...Communist Chinese against Islamic extremists...is there a downside? Maybe the next jihad can clear Afghanistan and Iraq and set up camp in China.....
Yeah....who do you root for in that?
The Han Chinese. They wanted the Uighurs back from Gitmo
to kill them!
This is not about Islam; it’s about Uyghur nationalism.
Yeah this is one of those situations that kind of put me into neutral territory.
My first thought is do we know these are muslims or is China trying to crush a rebellion by using a fashionable enemy as an excuse?
There was a Uighur song written about this... You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Migrate To Bermuda
Yeah, when it comes to info from China, there’s no way to tell what’s accurate.
But we do know that there are people who just want to raise their families and make a living caught in the middle of this. Same with Iran.
I’m totally fine with China getting a few Muslims blowing themselves up here and there. It would be fascinating to see what a wholly amoral entity like the Chinese government does to handle fanatics and suicide bombers.
So why did we send the Uighur terrorists from Gitmo to Bermuda? The CIA could have planted them in the orient to wreak havoc on the Chicoms.
Riiight... Just like Palestine-Israel is about their nationalism. -And never mind the fact that ‘Palestinians’ didn’t exist as a people until the arabs discovered how useful it was to portray their struggle as one of an oppressed minority.
Also, notice how thin the Xinjiang Uighurs are compared to the Gitmo Uighurs.
Excellent! Let the muslime start antagonizing the Chinese. Then maybe East and West can unite to eradicate that foul horde and restore the world to some measure of sanity.

On June 26, hundreds of Han Chinese workers attacked Uyghur workers working at a toy factory in Guandong (far away from Xinjiang) while they were sleeping at a factory dormitory. 26 Ughurs were reportedly killed. This was supposedly over the allegation from some Han Chinese that Uyghur raped a Chinese woman. The news travel fast to the Uyghur homeland and home boys apparently want some payback.

An entire nation does not lose its right to be a nation, just because you try to draw a parallel with Palestinians.
More on the point... The Uyghurs are a distinct culture and ethnic group that has been around for long, long time. They are NOT Chinese.
>> They are NOT Chinese <<
And their language is closely related to Turkish. In fact, pre-communist maps often refer to Xinjang as “Chinese Turkestan.”
So I wonder if the Turkish equivalent of the CIA is involved with the Uighur Independence Movement?
I don’t know.
What matters to me is that we don’t automatically dismiss the legitimate interest of Central Asian peoples to become or remain independent of the large empires — China and Russia specifically.
