When I was there it was white boys who were attacking us (jealous because their women were crazy about us). Not sure if that has changed in the ensuing 28 years?

“Police are hunting the six attackers, who are described as being dark-skinned.”

As for Australia being “saved” by the American navy, we need to remember the huge effort put forth by this country to save itself.
We are not talking about France here.
The Japanese had daily broadcasts bragging about the white slaves they were going to have working the fields in Australia. Having lived the country for a few years I believe the Japanese would have met their match if they invaded.

I would not, at this juncture, “bet the farm” on this crime being perpetrated by muslim immigrants. It is quite possible, but it is not a safe bet.

IMO, it is far more likely to be Muslim immigrants than Aborigines, who seem fairly peaceable and - more importantly - have no specific hostility towards the U.S. and its people in uniform.

There’s not enough information here to assume anything, other than 4 US sailors were assaulted by 6 people in Perth at a train station. There are scumbags all over the world and I’m sure Perth is no exception. Fortunately, the sailors were not seriously hurt and the perps are probably on tape and will be tracked down and dealt with.

Having had many Aussie military friends and surf buddies, I do not have any doubt that the Japs would have gotten their asses handed to them by the men of Australia.

“If it wasn't for the United States Navy, Australians would be speaking Japanese.”

Good Grief!

The Aussie's have been our best Allies and I hope they see us the same, they wouldn't stand for it. If an Aussie had been anywhere near that incident he/she would have been right in the middle of it. Love them Aussie's.

And without Australia’s Pine Gap, the CIA would be utterly screwed. Leave the Ugly American schtick to the Left. Australia’s a fantastic country, the women are beautiful and friendly, the beer great. Take the time to read their Defense Ministry’s recent white paper on projected US influence in the Pacific region. They’re planning for a day when the US can’t meet it’s commitments.

And many Australians do speak Japanese, it’s a huge trading partner and holiday destination, particularly for Australian skiers. Both countries are small relative to China (which both view as the primary long term threat to their national interests), both have a historical distaste for immigration, and both have a well-educated, literate populace— far more so than the US, which should place its public school system under the Department of Agriculture because they are nothing but moron farms.

Here’s a couple of podcast links to an ABC-Radio National program called Countrerpoint:

http://www.abc.net.au/rn/counterpoint/stories/2009/2539519.htm

It’s nice to hear an intelligent discussion of conservatism, instead of the heat sans light ratings generators that rip through the manic American populace.

You are right. Sure there are other backwards peoples on the earth, but, the islamics excel all others. In numbers desire, drive and magnitude.

We can also argue that it was your mother in law.

With what we know, I would bet on statistics and bet on islam over your mother in law.

No they wouldn’t.

So it's your contention that the Aussies, on their own, could have held off the Japanese, a task that China, Burma, The Phillipines, an much of the rest of Asia failed at?

Sorry it may be impolite to say it but the original writers statement seems factual.

> I have a slight suspicion that the assailants prefer speaking Arabic to English<

I’ve been to Perth 3 times in 10 years (nicest small city in OZ) and they have their share of anti=-American loons like we do here, and Perth is as lily-white as Beverly Hills.

I myself, have had a couple of yelling matches. It gets worse as you approach Melbourne. The port areas wont say a word because the US Navy docks there on occasions and you dont insult your money train.

LOL

Just my thought, thank goodness it wasn’t Marines, there would have 6 bodies to police up.

Yes, that is my contention. It is an opinion shared by many DownUnder and validated by the Japanese themselves.

> Sorry it may be impolite to say it but the original writers statement seems factual.

It’s not factual at all. The world will never know because Japan was never foolish enough to attempt an invasion of Australia or New Zealand. You can’t claim bragging rights on something that was never going to happen.

(grin!) You haven’t met my dear ol’ mother-in-law when someone has tracked mud onto her nice clean carpet!

All kidding aside, don’t get me wrong: I’m not discounting the possibility of muslims attacking these US sailors. The world’s largest muslim country, Indonesia, is right next door.

What I’m saying is this: it doesn’t have to be muslims, it is just as possible it’s someone else. DownUnder we have plenty of criminal scroats who are more than capable of assaulting four American sailors with a pair of scissors.

It’s just like not all violent crime in the US is done by Mexicans.

That’s absolutely right. There is also an ultra-secret spy station here in New Zealand at Waihopai.

I don’t like hearing the ugly American schtick at all, because to my experience Americans are fantastic people. Good friends and superb allies. WW-II was sixty-five years ago. Back then we were on the same side and our countries sent our bravest and best to fight our enemy, many of them died, and in the end our side won. On that subject little else matters.

OKAY, you suggest the possibility...whats the probability for that group? HIGHER,far higher! This is my point about your grandmother or mother in law. We can argue (for the sake of argument) all day that the sun will not rise tomorrow....but.... at the end of the day...

Based on what statistic? The ethnic makeup of Perth would be fairly similar to the ethnic makeup of Auckland, where I patrol. Based on what I’ve experienced, at 1AM in Auckland alcohol is the most likely cause of assault, with methamphetamine being right up there. Race would be nearly irrelevant. Islam would not feature into the mix at all.

I do not see much reason why Perth would be much different to Auckland in that respect. At 1AM it will be alcohol and/or methamphetamine that fueled this attack. That is the most likely cause. Islam is less likely.

So it’s your contention that the Aussies, on their own, could have held off the Japanese, a task that China, Burma, The Phillipines, an much of the rest of Asia failed at?

Japan suffered its worst military defeat at the hands of Indian, British and Australian troops, at Imphal, the town on India's eastern-most fringe.

War Cemetery, Kohima, India.

All the time, the Allies were still determined to regain Arakan. After being beaten back twice, they succeeded at the third attempt, where the breathtaking bravery of so many of Slim's men played their part.

A company commander looking for a missing soldier at night bumped into a Japanese patrol. In a frenzy of hand-to-hand combat, he shot one man, then grabbed the little body and swung it round like a flail, knocking his other two assailants off a cliff.

Then there was Umrao Singh, in command of a forward field gun detachment, who came under sustained fire from guns and mortars. Twice wounded, and while firing a Bren gun, he directed the fire of the surviving gun on the target.

He held the gun pit until dawn, and was found face down in the mud surrounded by ten lifeless Japanese soldiers and holding a hand-spike he had used in hand-to-hand combat. Singh survived and was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Years later, living in penury on his Indian smallholding, he was told he could sell his VC for a good price. He replied indignantly that he would never sully the honour of his fallen comrades.

Yet still the Japanese came. The battles of Imphal and Kohima, fought in the spring of 1944 on the far northeastern border of India and Burma against three Japanese divisions, were the decisive battles of the Burma campaign.

Before Imphal, the Japanese general, Mutaguchi, was so confident of Japanese invincibility that he had arranged for 'comfort women' (mostly Korean women forced into prostitution) to be flown in after the victory.

The Japanese hurled themselves with desperate courage on the British positions, but they held firm. Days turned into months.

A Japanese Lieutenant, Taiso Nishikawa, wrote from the front line in his diary: 'If we do manage to capture a position, the enemy bombards it with mortars and bombs it from the air to a heart-shaking degree; so that those who have dug deep trenches are buried in them, and those who have dug shallow have their hands and feet blown away.'

Eventually, when he realised that what remained of his troops were no longer obeying his orders, Mutaguchi broke off the offensive. With 55,000 casualties, Imphal and Kohima represented the largest defeat in Japanese history.
