In the end, the state of the Union comes down to the character of the people. I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there.
In the fertile fields and boundless prairies, and it was not there. In her rich mines and her vast world commerce, and it was not there.
Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits, aflame with righteousness, did I understand the secret of her genius and power.
America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.
Thanks LBJ and the ACLU atheists for destroying our country.
Daniel Webster said this:
“Our ancestors established their system of government on morality and religious sentiment. Moral habits, they believed, cannot safely be entrusted on any other foundation than religious principle, nor any government secure which is not supported by moral habits...Whatever makes men good Christians, makes them good citizens.”
No wonder statists want to remove all religion from the lives of Americans.
You misrepresent what I said which is that churches to have a tax exempt status should not be in the business of politics.
If they want to be political, and many are, they need to lose that status. Otherwise the dem party will become a church tomorrow.
But I did not malign the decency and the goodness of churches.
Just for the record the beautiful de Tocqueville quote appears to be completely spurious. The polite way of saying this is that ‘it has been attributed’ to de Tocqueville, but does not appear in ‘Democracy in America’ or any known de Tocqueville text.
