I’ve got a retired relative with a small “truck farm” who sells produce from his front yard (honor system). Even though I know his wife went to high school with the Burpee’s (Fordhook Farms was next to the athletic field) he bought tomato plants mail order from St Louis, can’t imagine why, best deal I guess.
This year he drove down to Warminster, PA and picked up some of the Burpee $4 tomato plants, they had to be special varieties not available elsewhere. Haven’t seen him yet to ask. I’ve seen the Burpee seed catalog, some unique stuff in there.
They’re in PA, I tried growing radishes. First year the garden was planted in the wasteland part of the property where grass didn’t grow. Mine were three inches long and about the thickness of pencil lead. Got better as I threw fertilizer on the soil about 3X/year.
I belong to a website called tomatoville.com.
It is a completely non profit, non commercial site that was
created by its’ owner just for his love of growing toms.
It's run on his dime and he asks for no donation nor accepts
any.
Many of the nations top tomato experts are regulars there.
Everyone is very welcoming and are happy to answer any and
all questions.
Radishes grow very rapidly. They are ready to be harvested
in 3 to 4 weeks. Thus they need loose, nutrient rich soil
that they can start feeding on immediately.
Radishes also grow well in flower boxes. As long as the box
is at least 6 inches deep; just give it a rich soil mix and
keep the soil moist as pots dry out faster than ground soil.
