House delays posting expenses online
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 3, 2009 | Louise Radnofsky

Members of Congress said Thursday that details of their expense claims wouldn't be posted online before mid-November at the earliest -- two and a half months later than the deadline previously set for publishing them in an electronic format for the first time.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered the House Chief Administrative Officer to put information about expenses claimed by members of the House on the Internet "at the earliest date," in an announcement reversing a longstanding policy of providing the information only in books totaling about 12,000 pages a year. The chief administrative officer, a congressional employee, set an Aug. 31 deadline. The Senate hasn't announced any plans to put its expenses claims online.

The announcement last month followed a series of Wall Street Journal articles on bonus payments and expense claims for luxury cars and high-end technology made by congressional offices.

The Committee on House Administration, the panel responsible for overseeing how the lower chamber runs itself, said in a statement Thursday that "several security and support issues" had been identified that would delay the Internet publication of the claims.

The committee said that the first claims to be posted online would cover the third quarter of 2009, and would appear "as soon as possible" after that period ends Sept. 30. Compiling information about the claims usually takes about six weeks. It wasn't clear whether there would be additional delays beyond that.

Kyle Anderson, a spokesman for the committee, said that a specific date for the appearance of the claims wasn't available [...].

As a result of the delay, the first claims to be posted online will cover a period in which lawmakers were aware that their expenses would be made public in this way.

Quoting the first comment at the WSJ site:

"In other words, when the first report comes out, the data will not be representative of past practices. Lawmakers can’t disclose their past expenditures truthfully without being embarrassed. Not only do they need time to make things look good, they also need to find other soruces of income to cover costs."

All animals are equal, but those with relatives in the US Congress,
are much more equal than others.

Apparently, we misunderstood ‘transparency’. When they say ‘transparent’, they mean their crimes and corruption will be transparent, not viewable.

Technologically this could have been done overnight. The key to remember is this: it takes no thought to tell the truth, it only takes thought to lie...

The delay is no problem as long as no Congressional pay checks are issued until the promised info is posted online.

I wonder if this might work as a cure for some of this BS. Can we tie congressional pay to performance? You know they have a certain pay. Tie their wages to the budget, you go over you lose pay. If you do not start paying off the deficit, without extra “taxation revenue” again you lose pay!!

Gosh, I wonder why? Probably didn’t want to force someone to work in a week shortened by the observation of our nation’s birthday.

Folks, we have got to find a way to term limit that bunch. Please note that most if not all of the worst offenders are the ones that have been there three terms or longer ( much much longer for some)
An amendment to the Constitution is the only way and there is no way that I can think of to get such an amendment past the Congress.
And don't give me that crap about ‘you can vote them out’
No we cannot! Only the idiots in their districts can and they ain't gonna as long as their Congress Weasel keeps bring home the bacon.

articles on bonus payments and expense claims for luxury cars

Which will probably bear the descriptors "Monetary Adjustments" and "Travel Expenses" in the online reporting system.

Man oh man....our government is so corrupt.

The direction government is going, if it's kept up soon it will be prison time for stating such a truth.

“in a statement Thursday that “several security and support issues” had been identified that would delay the Internet publication of the claims.”

After seeing how the voters in Great Britain responded to publication of expenses, ‘job security and voter support’ are where it’s at.

I hate to sound bravado, but the thought of being locked up for defending the truth......I don't think so.

Not unless I'm caught off guard.
