Sanford Did Not Spend Improperly, Official Says
The New York Times ^ | 2009-07-02 | Shaila Dewan

A review of travel and financial records showed that Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina did not spend public money improperly while conducting an extramarital affair, the chief of the State Law Enforcement Division said Thursday.

Since Monday, the governor’s continuing revelations about the affair, including his admission that he had seen his lover more times than he initially acknowledged, have stepped up calls for his resignation and heightened support for an investigation into his travel records.

The chief of the State Law Enforcement Division, Reginald Lloyd, said that the review of Mr. Sanford’s records was not a criminal inquiry, that the governor had cooperated and that there was no evidence of any crime.

“Until we get some fact suggesting a criminal violation or the possibility of a violation,” Mr. Lloyd said, “SLED’s done. We don’t intend to be used in a political battle about the governor.”

The governor’s spokesman, Joel Sawyer, said Mr. Lloyd’s report “confirms what we’ve said from Day 1.”

“No public money was used in relation to the governor’s admitted marital infidelity,” said Mr. Sawyer, who released the travel records after Mr. Lloyd’s news conference. “This issue is behind us once and for all.”

He may not have spent improperly, but he acted improperly and keeps talking improperly.

His wife says she can forgive him, but you know what would be even harder to forgive than his conduct?---his statements that Maria was his soul mate and that he was TRYING to fall back in love with his wife. Just curious--how do you feel about those statements? I think if it is such a chore, don't bother.

It will be interesting and instructive to see whether the left lets go of the “spent taxpayer funds” argument as an attack gambit.

I think it’s pretty safe to say they won’t. At minimum, the innuendo will persist, depsite this report. Resolution of unkonwns isn’t their strong suit. It’s far more useful and intellectually lazy to wear us out with tired, repetitive arguments.

I’m NOT defending Sanford. I am strictly talking about attack tactics.

"This has got to be a real downer for the MSM."

I seriously doubt if the leftist media even cares what the details are in each news piece.

They simply want to keep the name and the political affiliation in the headlines for as long as possible.

All the good little vote slaves need their "two minute hate".

There’s gonna be a free for all for that stimulus money he stood in the way of.

If the left cared a bit about how taxpayer dollars were being spent they would be hounding my governor out of office early.

Supposedly they can’t use stimulus money to balance the books but Jenny Granholm has every intent to do so. Not to mention the dozens of other scams she wants to waste it on.

Sanford is obviously mentally unstable. It’s time for him to get help.

If they don’t think he spent improperly, they didn’t check his time.

I asked my wife how she would feel, if I took a mistress, called the mistress my soulmate, and that I would TRY to fall back in love with my wife.

She said, “I’d feel fine. YOU wouldn’t be feeling a thing...”

One article did state that he added a trip to Buenos Aires onto an already planned official trip to South America that did not originally include Buenos Aires. I don’t have a link for it, but I think it was posted on Free Republic.

That sounds like improper use of taxpayers’ money to me, if it’s true.

He should leave public life as soon as possible.

However, this statement "the guy was/is nuts!" would obviously apply to the majority in Congress today.

Using state funds for illicit purposes would have provided some great fodder for the MSM as this would escalate the scandal from an extramarital affair (commonplace in the political sphere) to an illegal activity, which of course would have generated even more coverage and above the fold headlines.

Sanford is obviously mentally unstable. It’s time for him to get help.

If he's mentally unstable, then so are all the millions of other people who do the same foul thing every year. This happens too often to be called mental instability, and if you consider that someone is mentally unstable when he commits an act you are almost absolving him of responsibility, because crazy people can't help themselves, right?

You are way off base. I have no idea how long Sanford has been unstable, but his obsession with digging pits with his excavator indicates that he has had unstable tendencies in the past. It is not the fact that he had an affair that makes him unstable, it is his looney toon press conferences and tearful rants that are less than rational.

My guess is that the man has been walking that fine line between sanity and insanity for quite awhile. As the political pressures of the job grew, he began to waiver and the romantic affair was an escape from reality and every day pressures. The trip to Argentina was as much a mental fugue as a physical fugue.

He didn’t spend inappropriately.

But he spoke unappropriately.

I surely hope Jenny dumps him and runs for Governor.
