What prior administration does the Obama administration most resemble? In its early days, there is a surprising contender: that of Richard Nixon.
Helen Thomas sounded the theme in an interview with CNS News that followed a Robert Gibbs press conference:
The Following a testy exchange during Wednesday's briefing with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas told CNSNews.com that not even Richard Nixon tried to control the press the way President Obama is trying to control the press.
"Nixon didn't try to do that," Thomas said. "They couldn't control (the media). They didn't try.
"What the hell do they think we are, puppets?" Thomas said.
I think the answer to that question is Yes, actually.
The Nixonian note was sounded again in the Obama administration's response to Republicans who are pressing for information on the firing of AmeriCorps Inspector General Gerald Gilpin. It appears that Obama's firing of Gilpin was both illegal and politically motivated, and his aides are circling the wagons, hoping the issue will go away without their having to provide information to Congress. Once again, Byron York has the story:
All in all, the "extensive review" appeared more of a sham review -- an exercise designed to support a decision that had already been made. Nor has the White House been open about it. "Information provided to my staff by Mr. Eisen has been incomplete and misleading," Republican Rep. Darrell Issa wrote in a July 1 letter to White House counsel Gregory Craig.
For its part, the White House is hinting broadly that it might invoke executive privilege to keep documents from Congress. "Your questions seek information about the White House's internal decision-making process," Craig wrote to Sen. Charles Grassley on June 30. "These questions implicate core executive branch confidentiality interests." At another point, Craig pledged to cooperate "to the fullest extent possible consistent with constitutional and statutory obligations."
The message, apparently, is for GOP investigators to back off.
Ah, executive privilege! The very words are redolent of the 1970s. (Although, of course, all administrations invoke executive privilege on occasion, sometimes properly, sometimes not.) Barack Obama is often compared to Jimmy Carter; the resemblances are obvious. But there may be a streak of Nixon in Obama, as well.
Obama didn't.
Obama is an EVIL hypocrite through and through.
Nixon's only crime was getting caught being paranoid about his competitors - the Demoncrats and tried to lie his way out of that. Other than that, Nixon was and remains an honorable man - something Obama is incapable of being.
It took me 40 years to say this but now is the time. Thank you Ms.Thomas for calling it as it is. I’m proud of your reporting and backbone.
Among all the other differences between Obama and Nixon (the blatantly obvious ones), Nixon was very strong on foreign policy. Obama is a pathetic, weak disaster for America not only in foreign policy, but in national defense.
It truly amazes me how the media acted like whores during the campaign and are now starting to get upset that they’re actually being treated like someone’s whore. Geez ... they’re kind of like the slut in high school. All the guys want to take you out on Friday night because they know you’ll put out, but no one wants to take you to the prom.
I’m not proud of her ... she was one of the biggest whores and now she’s upset becaue Obama won’t kiss her?
I not proud of her either..Obama knows he can get away with it because of she and her friends are lapdogs..she just wants Obama to notice her.
And Obama is farrrr worse than Nixon. Obama has pulled off a coup of the USA and must be stopped. He is intentionally running it into the ground. Soros, Alinski and Ayers are his mentors.
Hussein, whether he was born in the US or not, does not have an American's sensibility, ideals or consciousness.
Whores don’t like being played!
Is that a pre or post civil war picture of Helen ?
I don’t see any resemblance. Nixon graduated second in his class from Whittier College in 1934 and ... Duke University’s law school, graduating third in his class in 1937. And he didn’t have somebody else or affirmative action pushing him through. And his record is public. zero, where you at?
If Nixon never even tried to control the press, then why is it “Nixonian” of Obama to try and control it?
YET, they’re still whoring for Obama.
No he did not, not the first time. Obama's margin of victory was much greater than Nixon's election victory. Nixon did win re-election in a 49 state landslide later.
“No he did not, not the first time. Obama’s margin of victory was much greater than Nixon’s election victory. Nixon did win re-election in a 49 state landslide later.”
No way.
Nixon did win by a landslide which made it even more pathetic that he was so paranoid about the Demoncrats and the break in.
You have your facts WRONG!
Give ole Nixon some credit and stop elevating the scum of the earth at his expense. Nixon was graceful not only once but twice. Nixon WON over Kennedy but he let it go. He didn’t want to create chaos. Later it was determined that voted fraud elected Kennedy.
He didn’t HAVE to resign when Watergate happened but he did. Unlike Clinton, he didn’t want to put the country through hell. So, get your facts straight!
Thank you!
Some IDIOTS here don't understand what that is.
The Marxist ahole deserves no respect.
He should be shunned and thrown out of office for his utter ongoing dishonesty. Obam Marxist is a despicable person in EVERY WAY.
Please consult a history book to see that your facts are wrong. Nixon’s first election was a narrow victory. The landslide came in the re-election. Obama won by a bigger margin than Nixon’s initial win in 1968.
