The NHS was told today to stop relying on charities to fill funding gaps after figures revealed many trusts would not pay the full cost of electric wheelchairs for disabled children.
Freedom of information figures obtained by the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign found children were subject to a postcode lottery in terms of equipment.
Statistics from 54% of NHS trusts in England and Scotland revealed that disabled children in England are forced to wait five months on average for a wheelchair.
The worst performing primary care trust (PCT), East Lancashire, in the north-west of England, had an average wait of two years for an electric wheelchair.

Here the wait is something like 1 week for durable medical equipment. If in a hospital you can get it right after the doctor writes the prescription.
Coming soon to the United States. I think the long delays in long lines at the airport and the Motor Vehicles department is to get Americans used to long frustrating delays. This is sick.
OK , but who pays for it?
Private insurance of course. But even if you have medicaid or medicare along with private insurance you can get it right away. There is no reason why someone can’t have medical insurance. It might mean giving up that cell phone, or iTunes downloads, but it is possible.
Government mandates on insurance companies - demanding that they cover all kinds of tests and treatments that many people may not even want - are what have made health insurance so expensive. People cannot just buy the coverage they want, nor can they shop for insurance outside their own state.
What we need is a real free market in health care and in insurance; not the horrible, distorted semi government-run junk we now have.
A few years back, Sen. Kennedy (who has an important anniversary coming up later this month!) said that the libs would get nationalized health care by increments. The more government interferes, the worse things get, and then people (not understanding what caused the problems) demand more government “help”. Teddy is a cunning old serpent.
