I don't know if Palin will be ready for 2012 (and really, she needs to be ready 1.5 - 2 years earlier), but I like the comparisons to Quayle. First of all, Quayle wasn't stupid, but he wasn't as articulate as he could've been.
Second, if W hadn't popped up out of nowhere (which, really, he did), Quayle would've been polling a lot higher, gathering all the I-wish-we-still-had-Bush-instead-of-Clinton sentiment.
His biggest problem was overcoming public perception. The biggest difference between him and Palin was that he was in the spotlight for 4 years as V.P. where ever gaffe was amplified. The press is remedying that now with Palin.
