West's hypocrites betray Iranians
The Australian ^ | July 02, 2009 | Greg Sheridan

Posted on 07/02/2009 1:32:01 AM PDT by Dundee

THE missing actor in the tragic and gruesome story of Iran since the stolen election of June 12 has been the Western human rights lobby. Where is it?...

...Apart from ethnic Iranians, there has hardly been a single demonstration in any Western capital in support of the Iranian democrats.

Yet isn't there a class, in Australia and in the rest of the West, of people deeply concerned about human rights? The class that Robert Manne and Judith Brett call the moral middle class?...

What about the groups explicitly dedicated to human rights?...

...David Menashri, one of the great authorities in the world on Iran... asked this simple question: "Can't the West exercise its moral muscles?..."

The truth is the language and practice of human rights advocacy in the West has become completely corrupted by the postmodern ideologies of the contemporary Left. In this parallel universe all crimes are a subset of imperialism and the only true villains are the US, Israel and, for us, Australia.

When Frank Brennan commented that the Victorian human rights charter had been ineffective in its own terms and had little to do with human rights, but had become "a device for the delivery of a soft Left sectarian agenda", he was, perhaps somewhat unconsciously, making a broader point about the debasement and collapse of authentic human rights advocacy in the West.

Where are you on Iran, Louise Adler, happy to accuse Israel of war crimes without the slightest evidence, but apparently unstirred by the murder of hundreds of innocent civilians in Iran?

What have you got to say, Antony Loewenstein, stupidly and inaccurately labelling Israel an apartheid state and approvingly quoted in the Iranian official media, but listless on your blog in the face of the Iranian repression?...

KEYWORDS:
The conclusion to Sheridan's article hits the nail right on the head.

The conclusion must be that many Western human rights organisations, and many of the most self-congratulatory and morally vain posturers, are not interested in human rights at all. They are interested in advancing a soft Left sectarian agenda. Except, of course, that the word soft may be wholly misplaced.

Bingo. Democracy is dying and being replaced by soft Socialist totalitarianism. The whole world finally fell for the social safety net idea which allows governments to take over your lives. I don’t see a return of the Republicans in this country and I see, as Rush fears, a 3 or 4 term Presidency for Obama.

Simply put, people for for “free” healthcare, education, food, oil, etc and never realize what they give up. Or how desperate people like the Clintons, Obamas, Pelosis and Reids are to seize power and force their agendas on you.

I am always stunned that people trust these ambitiousand ruthless sociopaths.

"Human rights issues" are only cool and hip if it's directed against the US (especially with a Republican President) or it's allies.

Since the islamic regime is "anti-imperialist" and anti-American it is totally fine with lefty "human rights" groups. Their agenda is so transparent.

BTW it were exactly these lefty western “human rights” groups that lobbied hard for the ‘rats around Carter (not to mention the Europeans) to betray and undermine the Shah, creating the current mess in the first place.

Interesting comments to Sheridan’s article castigating the Human Rights’ fraud.....evidently this author is a lefty who has turned against his own and the Lefty hate mob has responded in the comments.

These totalitarian Marxists show their true colors when they turn their backs to the killing of the Iranian revolutionaries. The killing in Iran has been ruthless. The Iranian jack boot guards are pulling people out of their homes in the early morning hours and raping and slaughtering them. Such tactics must be OK to Zer0 and his thug coterie.

This same indifference happened with the Killing Fields of Cambodia. It is the modus operandi for the Leftist socialists around the world. They would be doing the same killing if they were in the same position.

But what are we really seeing in Iran? While the demonstrators who are being murdered in the streets of Iran seem to be pro-freedom, they are supporting who? The losing candidate is himself a thug, has bloody hands from his own previous thuggery, and would continue Iran's rush to nuclear weapons.
