It means that McCain was doomed, and the down ticket was doomed because conservatives were so discouraged and disgusted that many would not bother to go to the polls, fund raising was weak, crowds were small, enthusiasm nonexistent and then suddenly McCain made the bold decision to choose Governor Palin.
Palin exploded on the scene and turned the race around, suddenly fund raising increased, and massive crowds started showing up, after a damp, grey, primary full of Romney and McCain a new conservative champion had emerged from Alaska, Governor Palin could not drag McCain across the finish line but she did succeed in firing up the base and getting many conservatives to "vote for Palin, not McCain" which saved us from a total wipe out and saved some lower offices down the ticket.
Turnout is a serious issue and Romney does not inspire people to "turnout" instead he leaves the base uninspired and unenthusiastic.

I cant predict Romney turnout but if the election was today as many or more people would turn out to vote AGAINST Palin as for her. I get the impression that many freepers think everyone agrees with them, everyone thinks like them, until election day, then they are very sad and bitter. But Republicans have finally hit botton and the 60 vote majority will turn the voters against democrats,
