COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Power generator Exelon says it's calling off plans to build a new nuclear plant in Texas.
The Chicago-based company said Tuesday that worries over the economy and limited availability of federal loan guarantees are the reasons behind putting the project at Victoria, Texas, on hold.
Exelon has become the second power company in two months to postpone work on a new nuclear plant. St. Louis-based AmerenUE said in April that it was suspending work on a project in Missouri, also because of cost issues.
Exelon is the largest nuclear power generator in the U.S.

Barack Hussein Obama's tyranny strikes again.
Bummer. Oh well I’msure we can make up the difference with windmills.
There is never any good news, nothing about advancing America.
Surprised at this change: Last word I got (2 weeks ago) from people I trust near the design team was that design and purchasing was proceeding on schedule.
This is very BAD news. We need to get the nuclear program going again. It’s critical for the future of the country. We cannot make it without nuclear power.
That’s OK. We can put solar rainbow dreams on everyone’s roof and champagne windmill wishes in everyone’s back yard and we’ll all be energy independent dreamers and make it all come true!

When speaking January 15, 2008, in Las Vegas, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) said Barack has one of his biggest supporters in terms of funding, the Exelon Corporation, which has spent millions of dollars trying to make Yucca Mountain the waste depository. When evaluating the veracity of her statement, PolitiFact.com commented Hillary Clinton had her facts in order.
A prominent supporter of Yucca Mountain, though, is Exelon Corp., an electric utility based in Chicago.
Exelon operates the largest nuclear fleet (17 reactors [in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey]) and the third-largest commercial nuclear fleet in the world, according to Exelons Web site.
In a speech to nuclear energy executives in May 2007, Exelon CEO John Rowe said permanent disposal at Yucca Mountain or a similar facility remains a long-term imperative for the industry, even while he acknowledged it would not happen soon.
We asked a spokesman for Exelon if theyve spent millions promoting Yucca Mountain. We were told they dont track their spending by project. Public records, though, indicate the company has spent more than $10-million on lobbyists between 2002 and 2007, with Yucca Mountain listed among its top issues. That doesnt count previous years; the Yucca Mountain project has been debated for more than 20 years.

Bailout candidate ?
It figures...(eye roll)
Thanks for the links. Can’t wait to read about the latest thugocracy move that the media refuses to report.
Okay, it makes sense now. They are doing a shakedown for govt. money.
Exelon also made a statement about the cap & trade bill in the House (they applauded it)
Also gave 34.1K to Mark Kirk one of 8 traitors who voted for it.
That’s the only picture available of Michael Signator. There is a HUGE connection with obummer and Signator. One that Axelass and rahmbo squelched and scrubbed as soon as the connection went viral when reporters caught the Kenyan coming out of the condo that he kept a couple of blocks from their home in Chicago. Signator also supposedly has a house in the suburbs. An ex cop supposedly. Wonder where an ex cop get the $$ to have that condo so close to his *pal*? Follow the money trail.
FYI. I wonder if they wanted to raise their rates on Texans now, as well.
Where are the damn enviro-whackos? The same whackos that protest at every nuke-waste site.
They must be stopped, some way some how. I don't know if the economy can survive to 2010 or 2012.
Maybe the state of Texas needs to guarantee this company a future. Texas should guarantee to this company that they will do the tenth amendment thing and tell the feds to suck wind if they build this nuclear power plant. Isn’t Texas it’s own independent grid already.
thanks, bfl
WOW, those are some heavy duty connections there. Is there anyone in DC that isn’t corrupt and rotten to the core? It’s sad when I actually admire Honduras for upholding the law.
June 26, 2009 - Exelon Applauds House for Bold, Decisive Action on Waxman-Markey Climate Change Bill
Energy company a longtime supporter of economy-wide cap-and-trade legislation
CHICAGO (June 26, 2009) Exelon today praised the U.S. House of Representatives for its passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) sponsored by Chairman Henry A. Waxman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and Chairman Edward J. Markey of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee.
Addressing climate change is one of the most compelling causes of our time, and we applaud the House for taking bold and decisive action to pass this pragmatic and balanced legislation, said John W. Rowe, chairman and CEO of Exelon. Chairmen Waxman and Markey, along with Representative Boucher and Speaker Pelosi, have crafted a bill that balances the need to protect consumers, business and the economy with the urgent need to reduce our nations greenhouse gas emissions.
Exelon is particularly pleased that free allowances will be allocated to local utilities to help mitigate the impact of increased prices on consumers.
This bill protects Americans pocketbooks during the transition to a low-carbon economy by allocating a significant percentage of emissions allowances to local utilities. Utilities will use the proceeds from these allowances to help customers affected by higher energy prices through rebates, low-income assistance, customer energy-efficiency programs and other measures, Rowe said.
Exelon also thanked House Representatives for their support of this bill that will protect the nations economy and American families budgets and jobs, while preserving the environment for future generations.
Addressing climate change is one of the most compelling causes of our time, added Rowe. We encourage members of the Senate to follow the bold and decisive action of the House to work on passing similarly comprehensive climate change legislation during this Congress.

The Chicago-based utility launched an all-stock takeover bid in October for NRG Energy Inc., which rejected it as inadequate.
Exelon has resisted pressure to sweeten its bid so far. But its board of directors has a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday amid expectations that a higher offer is in the cards.
