Wall Street's Fear Gauge Suggests Worst is Over
CNBC ^ | 6/30/2009 | Staff

Growing confidence that the U.S. economy is putting the worst recession in decades behind it has pushed the index known as Wall Street's fear gauge to its lowest level since just before Lehman Brothers collapsed last September.

The CBOE Volatility Index [VIX 25.37 0.02 (+0.08%) ] , known as the VIX, provides investors with portfolio insurance against fluctuations in the S&P 500 index.

It soared to historic highs in the weeks after Lehman's rapid failure pushed financial markets to the brink and left an already crippled economy in tatters.

But amid numerous signs the economy is on the edge of a recovery, coupled with the best quarter for stocks in more than 10 years, the VIX has begun to look like its old self again.

Been hearing this for a while. Can also be found in the newspapers of the day between 1930 and 1940.

I would love for this to be true, but common sense tells me there is worse yet to come.

There can be no financial “recovery” until Obozo is out of office.

We are not seeing an increase in confidence in stocks, but a decrease in confidence in government securities. Some have decided good companies are a better bet than the Gov.

Numerous people are talking now about a 'double-dip' recession:

Financial Gain, Economic Pain (Double-Dip Recession Likely)

We’ve turned the corner, light is at the end of the tunnel, the worst is over, we’re on the road to recovery...

We’ve heard it all before. Wait ‘til the reality of all this wonderful legislation coming out of the Politburo begins to take hold. We’ll see what kind of “recovery” is underway.

I've been reading this kind of statement for about 4-5 years now and it still has not come to pass. Seems like the powers that be simply move things in the opposite direction of what conservatives think is going to happen. And, apparently, the liberals have the money (although they claim Republicans are rich) to make it happen.

Seriously, does anybody still trust anything attached to Wall Street?

I understand there are thousands of small businesses gearing up to produce these.

That will employ tens of millions of Americans with $22.50 an hour non health care taxed Union jobs to keep the windmills a turning round and round.

Not me.....but amazingly, I think a lot of people still do.

I do not understand that phenomenon for one second.

You are right. The WSJ yesterday had an article in the finance section pointing out that earnings do not support the run up in prices and that there is NO hint of earnings rebounding anytime soon. A real recovery cannot occur with all the socialist ills this Congress is forcing upon the nation.

Unless the Senate kills Cap & Trade, the worst is yet to come, and there will be no quick fix or stimulus to correct it.

Can I take mine home after work? That’ll come in handing for lighting the fireplace after all the natural gas has been exhausted because we don’t explore, recover or produce the stuff any more.

The high unemployment rates alone don’t indicate any type of recovery. Businesses continue to close, and commercial real estate is the next big bust. I’m not sure what the positive signs are, if any, of a recovering economy. Add to our current miseries the massive tax increases planned by the Democrats, and you have the ingredients for a mess from which we may never recover. States and municipalities are hurting for money since tax payers are making less and paying less in taxes. City services are being cut, and when “the poor” begin receiving IOUs instead of their government support checks, watch out for increased crime.

Oh, and that $9 trillion in paper money that is being printed? The only difference between that and my own printed money is that theirs’ is on official paper using official ink. Does the government really think they can do that without any negative side effects?

I agree that doomsayers have been talking like this for quite a while, but I think this snowball is going downhill too fast. Also, at this point it may be in the best interest of “the powers that be” to just let America plummet into a severe depression. That’s how the real dictators get their power.

Whatever! I will put this one in the lying MSM bin with the “green shoots” story and “stepping back from the brink” lies about the economy from the last 6 months.

One more comment, and I’m going to be writing about this on my blog, but just because something has never happened in our lifetimes, doesn’t mean it will never or CAN never happen. That comment isn’t aimed at you personally, but toward my own friends and relatives who seem to think that because we’re Americans and live in America we can expect perpetual security and prosperity, with maybe a down tick every once in a while.

and green shoots have been popping up everywhere . . .

Gonna be interesting these next two years when the Alt-As reset and it's really gonna get nasty when those who played by the rules, had jobs, and then lost theirs start losing their homes as well.

This type of ‘analysis’ is typical of CNBC and is why people should watch it only with the sound turned down and not read any of their nonsense.
