Audit fails to rule out gold heist at Mint
Security probe called as sloppy bookkeeping rejected as cause of missing riches

OTTAWA The federal government has ordered an immediate review of security at the Royal Canadian Mint after an external audit suggested criminal activity could be behind the disappearance of $15.3 million worth of gold and other precious metals.
The months-long external review ruled out sloppy bookkeeping or accounting errors for the fact that 17,500 troy ounces of gold (about 544 kilograms) has gone missing, raising the possibility that thieves took it.
"A higher amount of gold should be on hand than the physical amount of gold counted," concludes the report, prepared by Deloitte and Touche.
And the review reveals that some silver, platinum and palladium is also missing, although Mint officials could not say how much.

Ping!
Custodian cleans up.
Not to forget that there are many longstanding rumors and conspiracy theories that our own Ft. Knox was sacked decades ago, and is basically empty.
Wikipedia has a decent roundup of the various charges.
Goldfinger ping!
Looted for only $15 million? Must be nice.
I personally moved gold at Fort Knox in 1977, as short-time casual labor for a joint Treasury/GAO audit. I assure you, there was a big pile of gold there, then. We moved around 47,000 ingots from two vaults, down the hall to two empty vaults, with detailed counting and assaying along the way. There were many other sealed vaults we did not touch, but you could see the gold in them through ventilation holes in the doors.
I need to find my picture of Michael Blumenthal, Carter’s SecTres, standing in a vault, gold stacked well over head-high, holding a bar, with my name clearly visible in the chalk graffiti on the masonite wall lining behind him. We put that gold there.
You know the rules, actual facts are not permitted in a response to a conspiracy post.
Heh! Exactly.
Proceeds invested with Madoff....

Interesting story.
And in turn I must assure you that I don’t believe the conspiracy theories Ft. Knox, I just know that they’re out there. I referenced the Wikipedia page only because I accidentally encountered it not too long ago, and honestly I had zero idea that people believed such things about Ft.. Knox.
Anyhow I don’t believe in conspiracies at all. They’re psychological artifacts generated by the psyche to quell uncertainty.
