Time is running out for the legislatures in Arizona, California, Indiana, Mississippi and Pennsylvania to solve budget gaps.
The last time Indiana missed its deadline for passing a budget and had to shut down the government was during the Civil War.
But on Monday...
Indiana is one of five states -- along with Arizona, California, Mississippi and Pennsylvania -- bracing for possible shutdowns this week as time runs out for lawmakers to close billion-dollar gaps in their fiscal 2010 budgets.
Of the 46 states whose fiscal year ends today, 32 did not have budgets passed and approved by their governors as of Monday afternoon...
In California, state finance officials will begin issuing IOUs on Thursday if lawmakers and the governor cannot agree on a way to close a $24-billion shortfall. The IOUs would go to local governments, vendors, taxpayers and college students receiving state financial aid. California has issued such IOUs only one other time -- in 1992 -- since the Great Depression.
In Arizona, which has never missed its constitutional budget deadline, officials are battling over how to resolve a $3-billion gap.

Shut the garbage DOWN!!
Visualize ex-government employees living in cardboard boxes.
Everyone needs to get out of all these states before it's too late...
lol
That li’l sucker’s clicking up pretty quickly, isn’t it?
As I recall, “debt clocks” were used to beat up on Reagan. And W.
What goes around, comes around.
In the case of California, its the Democratically controlled state legislature, unions and the use of state services by illegal immigrants caused this mess. They are the guilty ones who have killed this state.

Is that a tax revolt I see on the horizon? Yup. Inevitable, because the leeches in government won’t share the pain unless we rip them out of our flesh and squash them. It’s just not in the nature of parasitism. Vote their asses out. Any candidate who doesn’t run at least partly on a platform of reducing government doesn’t deserve your vote, no matter how many times you’ve supported them in the past.
No state workers end up losing ANYTHING. But the press gets pictures and videos of all the crying workers, who will get a PAID vacation.
Oh those poor, poor, AFSME workers will get another paid vacation on the taxpayers dime. Then congress will cave and approve Rendells budget. Happens every year.
Rendell manipulates the press every year and the press go along with reporting on the poor workers (who have lost NOTHING).
They are all scum.
Whoa nellie. Stay put and fix your own damn messes... Don't bring your lib Rat trash down here. With all due respect, we don't need external state punishment on top of fed punishment
Down here?
lol..
Yes, Indiana has a real problem.....how much of it’s SURPLUS to use. Be brave, Hoosiers, be brave.
...slowdown, FRiends. Don’t buy anything that you don’t need for a few years. Take it easy. Cut hours a little. Let’s make it all of the states.
Gov. Jan Brewer wants a TEMPORARY sales tax. TEMPORARY????
Agree there are too many state government workers. Would be good to prune some.
I can say this because I’m a federal government employee.
This presents a good opportunity for free Americans to separate from the liberal fascists, declare independence, and repudiate the government debt that the liberal fascists are using to enslave us all. It would also be a good time to peaceably occupy the Legislature offices and stop them from business as usual. Freedom will only come through non-violent revolution.
The last three "Honest to God, Cross my Heart and Hope to Die" Temporary tax hikes are still with us.
Sounds fine to me.
I have a dream where furloughed D.M.V. workers are lined up at the freeway on ramps with signs saying they’d work for food. But none have any skills. And All are fat and lazy,
Some people might realize how little of what government "does" for them really matters.
Look at the econ maps of where the states in the best economic shape are located. I don't look forward to an influx of idiots who take a dump in their drinking water, then move on to another watering hole only to leave the same mess (not saying you are in that group, but perhaps you live amongst them..?).
