Republican Gov. John Hoeven, who has avoided questions about whether he will challenge Democrat Byron Dorgan for his U.S. Senate seat, says he is likely to decide by early September whether he will make the race.
North Dakota's Republican state chairman, Gary Emineth, said he hoped to recruit Republicans to challenge Dorgan and North Dakota's Democratic congressman, Earl Pomeroy, by Labor Day, Sept. 7. Candidates against both men will need a long head start on campaigning and fundraising to improve their chances of winning, Emineth said.
Hoeven, in an interview, said Emineth's goal is reasonable and said his own decision will be made at about that time. "I don't have any specific time line, but that's probably a reasonable range," the governor said.
"Obviously, whoever is going to run has to do all of the things that go into running a strong campaign, and that takes time," Hoeven said. "Putting together a good, strong organization, making sure you do your fundraising, building a team, and getting to work getting your message out."
Emineth wants Hoeven to run against Dorgan, and he has promised to enlist national Republican leaders in the lobbying effort.
"We're putting on a full-court press ... to reach out to the governor and talk about the type of assistance that would be there," Emineth said. "It could be the race to watch in the country."

I don't want to live with selfish, ignorant people anymore and I sure don't want to support them.
Well, this guy Hoeven could beat him, and I hope he does. I'm not pooh-poohing his chances but you have to give Dorgan his due though. He knows how to portray himself as a throwback Dem and not being a MoveOn.org type. I predict Dorgan will come out against Cap and Trade and of course Amnesty too to cement his populist credentials. This may be the tightest Senate race in the country.
My fear is he'd turn RINO faster than others do.
Simple: When the two Democrat senators, Dorgan and Conrad are back home they sound conservative and attach out of state corporations-still a populist streak in ND.
Some years ago, I heard then Congressman Dorgan speak at a commissioning ceremony for a West Point graduate. It was a speech that would have made any FREEPER proud.
By supporting cap and trade? If that passes, North Dakotans will once again be wearing buffalo robes and following the bison for food. (which, to some of us, would be a good thing!)
By their actions ye shall know them...
Excellent observation-he is not a moonbat. Neither is Conrad.
The double curse.
I hope so or American Agriculture is dead.
Cap and trade won't come up for a Senate vote until after the August recess. I think Dorgan will oppose it so he can take an issue away from Hoeven or whoever opposes him.
One thing Dorgan has going against him is a picture of him, Conrad and Pomeroy grinning like idiots behind Obama on stage during the Democrat primaries. Obama is fast becoming one of the most hated people in the country by folks here in ND. Tie Dorgan to Obama at every opportunity along with that picture.
I understand where you're coming from, but just repeating that they're evil Democrats isn't going to defeat them.
You are right, Dorgan and Conrad are as liberal as anyone in Washington. I have had to endure these aholes for years. And people who do vote for them are nothing but thieves, vote for them to steal from others.
I’m amazed Republicans still run for the Senate in ND; they haven’t won there since, when, 1980, and with a liberal at that, Mark Andrews?
No, the ND people do not know that Conrad and Dorgan are liberals. They think the pair is “on their side”. They think they are sticking it to the “big guys”, always disliked in ND since the days of the Non-Partisan League.
We just moved to ND last year and I think from what I have heard Last Dakotan hit it on the head. I was amazed when I found out that this red conservative state had fed level dems. Also from what I have been able to glean Fargo is a fairly strong blue (though that might not be true). Though in my little teeny tiny town the mayor had an 0 sign on her business, big mistake I have 5 kids and it is an ice cream place. So did my neighbor, big disappointment.
I hope so. If that travesty becomes law, we are really going to see a diminution in the American standard of living. Exactly what the Leftists want. A weak and thread bare America...
