Am I an idiot for thinking that jail time should be reserved for violent crimes? People like this should pay restitution plus punitive damages.

How in the heck could this man possibly pay restitution? He scammed billions upon billions. He lived the high life, now he can experience the same life as those he has left destitute.

Where exactly is he supposed to find that kind of money? It is impossible for him to pay back the amount of money he swindled. A con-job of this magnitude deserves all the jail time they can throw at him. I agree that the punishment for most "white-collar" crimes should be weighed carefully, but in this case Madoff hid behind the trappings of the white-collar world to perpetrate a fraud that boggles the mind and deserves everything they throw at him and then some. Just because he didn't use a gun to steal the money doesn't mean he should walk the steets.

He lost virtually every dollar that people invested with him to begin with. So how is he supposed to earn the money for restitution? Investing in the markets?

If you are an idiot, then so am I. This man is not a serial killer that is a danger to society. I am simply horrified at our justice system.

Violent crimes? Like beating up an 80-year-old man so that he spends a week in the hospital, 6 weeks in a leg cast, and then gets well?

How about depriving that same 80-year-old man of his entire life savings through fraud, so that he is now penniless, destitute and has to spend all the entire remaining days and years of his life standing long hours doing the strenuous work of chopping meat every day just so that he has just enough money to keep surviving until he can die?

Madoff stole people's entire futures from them.

well you have a point, although, if fines were the only deterrent from this type of garbage, there would be many more of these types of schemes.
