Climate and the Spotless Sun
NY Times ^ | October 3, 2008 | Andrew C. Revkin

Posted on 06/28/2009 9:59:32 PM PDT by neverdem

Quiet Sun. (Space Weather Prediction Center) My colleague Ken Chang has written about the sun’s unusual stretch with 205 days this year without sunspots and a sleepy solar wind. Here are a couple of highlights:

The sun has been strangely unblemished this year. On more than 200 days so far this year, no sunspots were spotted. That makes the sun blanker this year than in any year since 1954, when it was spotless for 241 days. . . .

In another sign of solar quiescence, scientists reported last month that the solar wind, a rush of charged particles continually spewed from the sun at a million miles an hour, had diminished to its lowest level in 50 years. . . .

Scientists are not sure why this minimum has been especially minimal, and the episode is even playing into the global warming debate. Some wonder if this could be the start of an extended period of solar indolence that would more than offset the warming effect of human-made carbon dioxide emissions. From the middle of the 17th century to the early 18th, a period known as the Maunder Minimum, sunspots were extremely rare, and the reduced activity coincided with lower temperatures in what is known as the Little Ice Age...

Wouldn't you know it? Andrew C. Revkin buried it on the Dot Earth blog. I found a quote from it here:

Why the global-warming movement may cool off

New Strategy: The Earth “would be” heating due to increased C02, if it were not for this tired conservative sun! Let’s roll out the carbon credits “just in case” the sunavobich comes back to life.

Stil makes it “urgent” that we take action against AGW that isn’t occuring, and may not occur for billions of years to come. Let’s bury our economy because some sh*thead can’t admit when he’s wrong.

These people will be pressuring Obama to adopt such measures as a carbon tax. Such a tax would have a negative effect on the most important climate problem America faces at the moment, the problem with the economic climate.

"If he does that, he will make the recession worse," said Chapman. "So I don't think he will do anything along those lines in the near future."

Obviously, they are underestimating Zero's stupidity and cupidity.

Scientists are not sure why this minimum has been especially minimal, But Al Ron Gore (founder of the global warming religion Fry-N-Tology) insists that it can not possibly be because the sun is passing through an area of space with less fuel.

From the article:

................We’ll keep tracking trends, both here and 93 million miles away, and see how this cycle plays out.......................

Once they figure how the sun cycle plays out, we’ll all be wearing layers of rags to keep us warm, as the government has taken everything that we earn: in energy taxes; health taxes; stimulous taxes; GM taxes; bank recovery taxes; medicare taxes; social security taxes; income taxes; excise taxes; state income taxes; sales taxes; auto taxes; property taxes; school taxes; utility taxes; trash taxes; and, maybe even a new concept - US citizen taxes!

A deep solar minimum that induces global cooling would bury the careers of the GW crowd, right?

Nah! Just another paper writing, book selling opportunity at hand and another Book of Lamentations coming to a bookstore near you!

He’s not quite right (in the article, that is):
2007 and 2008 AND 2009 have been extremely low in spot activity: today’s group of three years has not been equalled since the early 1900;s (1913, for example) ... and there are no signs of any increase.

A few more months, and there will no comparable “lack of activity” since the little ice age and THOSE minmums.

Actually, here is the update for June 29th:

Spotless Days

Current Stretch: 3 days

2009 total: 137 days (77%)

Since 2004: 648 days

Typical Solar Min: 485 days

Looks like we're going for the record. 648 days spotless in the current minimum cycle is slowly becoming a phenomenon.

Yeah, that will take as much pressure as someone forcing me to have an extra scoop of ice cream.

Strange to the argument that 1933 is low sunspot, but 1934 is the hottest year on record.

Golly gee, one might almost infer from that data that A SIGNAL has been registered ..... of course, that couldn't be, because so many of our civil-infowar establishment have invested their dwindling reputations in AGW.

Meanwhile, I've told my remodeling contractor that after he gets all the old attic insulation batts out and vacuums thoroughly to get the allergens and dust out of there, that I don't want the formerly-valid R-19 standard for our latitude (29o N latitude), but R-30~ instead.
