'I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M SITTING NEXT TO A REPUBLICAN!'
By HARRY STEIN
June 28, 2009 --
The phone messages and e-mails from fellow conservatives started coming early on election night 2008 and continued well into the next day. Some were anguished, some merely fatalistic. But all featured at least a dollop of gallows humor.
As the dimensions of the disaster became apparent, my friend Cary announced he might have to skip work.
"For how long?" I asked.
"I'm thinking a year."
Who could blame him? Obama may be our worst nightmare, front man for every species of noxious, left-wing activism going, but at least he generally makes open-minded noises. In Manhattan offices like Cary's, the Chosen One's acolytes often don't even bother pretending to be civil toward those on the other side of the political spectrum.
Conservatives come in all stripes, but those of us who live in New York tend to share certain characteristics, Starting with independent judgment, a fair amount of backbone and, yes, the capacity to laugh at (if not necessarily with) those around us. How else to deal with all the stuff that would otherwise put a crimp in your day -- the sweet old lady in the elevator snarling about "those goddamn Republicans," the street lectures from 20-year-old environmental zealots, or the random leftist idiot at a dinner party waxing self-righteous and quoting George Soros?
The fact is, conservatives living and working among the liberals, among them but not of them, are not unlike field reporters for "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom"; we know them better than they know themselves.

Yes ma'am! You must be very happy now that the democrats have essentially total control of the house, the senate, the whine house, the courts, and the media.
Check back with me in a decade (assuming you aren't denied medical care and are left to die as a useless eater) and let me know how that works out for you.
Here's my number...
Liberals in left-wing enclaves are amazingly easy prey, because they’re never challenged. I relish my trips to the SF Bay Area. In social group-think settings, one little word of truth will fell them.
I’m mightily enjoying the discomfort of the DCmetro denizens who voted for Zero in November and are now beginning to suffer the end of the love affair.
How could he leave them like this? How could be abandon everything in HopeyChangeville and go all...uky and like, you know, a typical political male-whore?
Of course, they don’t say it out loud. It’s in the furtive glances and tightened lips when I most innocently say, “I hear Iraq is very violent now that President Obama is pulling the troops out of the cities?”
or
“I think that taxing our health benefits, especially for high wage earners might be on his agenda.”
or
“Did you hear (so and so and so and so) lost their jobs last month and there’s nothing and no one hiring. I wonder when that hugely gigantic taxpayer indenture Stimulus Bill President Obama signed will produce those jobs he promised? ~sigh~ I just hope he’s right and his projection of 11% unemployment doesn’t get any worse, but, unofficially, it’s around 20%. Hmmmmm...”
There’s nothing better than twisting the dig in further and further.
*I think Conan the Barbarian had it right. “What is best in life?”
What’s even more unbelievable: when a conservative PUB finds himself/herself sitting next to a journalistic RAT.
THAT, sir, is why there are Concealed Carry Laws. . . (evil grin)
The double takes, pointing and one woman told me she was so mad she was going to remove it, I told her you touch my car and I will break your arm. She flew off up the street to the Police Officer directing traffic at Main and Farragut, returning with him.
He told me she said I threatened to assault her, I said no, she dislikes my bumper sticker and told me she was going to remove it, I told her not to touch my car, he looked at the bumper sticker and told woman to keep her hands to herself, and if she tried to remove the bumper sticker she would be arrested, very disappointed she went on her way, the officer asked me where he could get the bumper sticker, I told him I have extras in my office around the corner, he stopped by and picked up two.
I’d be tempted to say “how did you live 85 years and manage to never learn enough to not be an idiot?”
According to this kid of 26 , Obama, would save us all, mortgages, loans anything you want.
I outlined just how quick and fast he would ruin this country........guess what now we don't argue, he shakes his head and says, you were right.
Well my response is always, I know and I never wanted to be this right.
I had a situation at a counter protest in San Fransisco, right before the most recent Iraq war, where a cute little Pali protester got in my face and said, "And do you know what they called Israel in the Bible?" obviously trolling for me to say 'Palestine'.
I locked eyes with her and said, "Yes, they called it the land that God Himself gave His chosen people, the Jews."
She blanched, turned on her heel and left.
These days I can barely contain my disdain when I see a giant SUV sporting an Obama sticker. Or some self-serving suburbanite woman with her little reusable shopping bag. I am so disgusted by the blinding ignorance that will bring ruin upon our country - that will destroy the lives of my children and as yet unborn grandchildren.
Unfortunately, most are so dazzling in their inability to reason that they won't even know what hit them.
What’s really fun is when someone sees my “Refuse Socialism” bumper sticker. They say “what’s wrong with socialism?” and I tell them “nothing, give me $20”. “What for?” they reply, appalled. “Well, you drive a nicer car. ‘From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.’”
Actually, I have found that most liberals are small minded lemmings. Anything to go along with the others, they never have to think for themsleves, they just repeat talking points as social conversation.
It's so much more satisfying to give a sweet smile while slipping the blade between her ribs.
More to the point, liberals feel, they do not think. By being pleasant you deny them justification for reacting to you with rage. Rage, loathing and hate are well with their comfort level for political discourse. Indeed, it's all most of them have.
Deny them their comfort zone, and worse, put them in a situation were they have to attempt to think, rather than just mouth slogans, and you have so disoriented them that they literally can't function.
It's a joy to behold.
That's very kind.
Me and Little Bill just spent last week in West Virginia, Harper’s Ferry, touring the local Civil War Battlefields...
At the campground we stayed at, I went swimming and struck up a conversation with aMaryland man who was a farmer, and politics came up.
The guy knew I was from Conecticut and started being so calm at first, but listened to me after 3 or 4 minutes of a rant, and he called over his wife
HONEY, THIS MANS FROM CONNECTICUT, AND HE’S A CONSERVATIVE!
Well, Bless Your Heart!
Funny as all get out, I tell ya!
The hatred of Sarah Palin I see in high-brow New Yorkers disgusts me.
Thank you, it's true I never wanted to be this right.
It's a very difficult relationship between us and I see no reason to make it harder, especially when we have finally found common ground.
Whats even more unbelievable: when a conservative PUB finds himself/herself sitting next to a journalistic RAT.
Had that happen a few years back on a flight from SF to Singapore. Next seat in Biz (Raffles Class) had 18 hours next to a CNN reporter who I needled about Rush and Slick throughout. He was a pleasant gentleman, but was definately pro-dem pro-big gov.
