Is the conservative movement rotten to its core?
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's bizarre revelation that he had an extramarital affair with a longtime female friend in Argentina has dealt another blow to an already decrepit Republican Party. After losing control of Congress in 2006 and the White House in last year's election, the Republicans are not only in the minority; they also are adrift and leaderless. Mr. Sanford was highly touted as one who could advance new ideas, as a fresh face for Republican conservatives.
He carved out a distinct political identity by fusing a command of policy with Southern folksiness. Pro-tax-cuts, pro-life and a staunch critic of big government, Mr. Sanford is a solid conservative. He has been a champion of old-fashioned, austere values such as frugality, modesty and Christian morality. His Southern conservatism is rooted in God, country and family.
. . . . .
He has openly confronted America's decline, often making comparisons to the decadent Roman Empire. He rightly pointed out that, like ancient Rome, America is plagued by malaise and is in decay: Our borders have become porous; our politics are rife with factionalism; our economy is slowly being strangled by bureaucratic statism; our national identity is disintegrating; and our culture is ravaged by neo-pagan hedonism and moral permissiveness.
His greatest accomplishment as governor is that he has abolished the illegal $155 million budget deficit he inherited from his predecessor. Mr. Sanford is a rare breed: He takes constitutional requirements seriously. And he balanced the budget by slashing spending.
He emerged as a national leader against President Obama's $787 billion economic stimulus plan.
. . . . .
Yet now he has squandered much of his legacy on an act of pure folly.

George Washington should remain the standard for our presidency. Competence and moral judgment are not mutually exclusive.
Democrats seek power over moral character. Look at their politicians and see where that leads.
Without a doubt our downfall is not an exclusive result or condition of the Democrats. Communism perhaps but not of just the Democrats. If we have any hope or chance of coming out of this we must get rid of the R/D dynamic, the MSM dictating and Marxism them permeates almost all aspects of our society. Our churches included.
Blackmail in the media was certainly on the horizon, probably his next run. The editor that had his emails stated that they new about the affair last December. They were just waiting for the most oppurtune time to release the emails and destroy Sanford.
Is the conservative movement rotten to its core?
Why would one think other wise? And may-be this is one of the reasons the pubis can’t fight the demis because of their on guilt ????
Interestingly, back when Sanford was in Congress he was one of the first and most vocal denigrators of Newt Gingrich who was then speaker. I emailed Sanford asking him to explain his attacks on Gingrich, a fellow conservative. He wrote back that Newt was behaving in ways that were unbecoming of the expected conduct of a congressman and leader. I never truly liked Sanford after that but did like most of his principled stands on the economy and power. All in all, a sad ending to a career. Now, he needs to step down.

...”In Europe, I must note that the traditional view of marriage included (for many of position) mistresses, and such behavior may not be considered a political detriment”...
Yes, because much of Europe is Godless and Socialist. The sexual partners of both men and women gain power over one another and, yes, First Ladies may be running the country..However, they are known to the population. A man’s mistress is an unknown, secret part of his character and his life and anyone holding high office in the US should be impeached for adultery, in my view, because it does speak of the depth of treachery which might exist in that person’s character. Better not take that chance.
Great. A right-leaning newspaper savaging a leading conservative. Gee, when’s the last time the leftist media savaged a Democrat? And some of us continue to wonder why a nation that’s 40% conservative is being savaged by a 20% minority of leftist freaks.
What did Reagan say about publicly criticizing one of our own?
Speaking of Reagan, correct me if I’m wrong, but was he not playing around on Jane Wyman? To my knowledge, the only perfectly righteous, moral man ever born was a fellow named Jesus Christ, and there will never be another like him, but if there was, I don’t think he’d be interested in entering politics.
No. I don't have the faintest desire to deceive my family for cheap thrills with a Latin hottie.
It's as simple as that.

I agree. Projection is a form of ameliorating your OWN digressions.
The point is expecting to get perfection, moral or otherwise, from political leaders who are just as human as we all are. That's just not smart.
The bible is full of examples on this. And if great men of God can fall, where's the surprise here?

post 37 - True, but this article’s point is made at the very last paragraph.
It almost makes one long for GA Jimmy’s “confession” that he had lusted “in his heart” instead of in Argentina!
Still though the desire to sin may pop up from below the surface when one is ill-prepared to resist. Maybe Mark Sanford is really a Flip Wilson Republican.
