They are having problems with the imaging satellite and you can’t rely on the daily images. Today’s images are not as bad, but still not that reliable http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/

The monthly trend shows what is happening. http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/daily.html They are launching a new satellite next year that is supposed to give much better images and also show thickness of the ice.

Overall, the total sea ice concentration for the North and South Poles are at about the historical average (since 1979 when they started using these satellite images. http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/global.daily.ice.area.withtrend.jpg
