Arizona Gun Rights Bill goes to Senate

HB 2439, the AzCDL-requested CCW training reform bill that now includes “Petty Offense” language for carrying concealed without a permit, passed out of the Senate Committee of the Whole (COW) this evening (6/26/09). As a bonus, the Senate voted to add the language of SB 1243, the AzCDL-requested Defensive Display bill, via an amendment offered by Senator Russell Pearce. Like we mentioned in our last Alert, HB 2439 has the shortest path to go to get to the Governor before the session ends in just a few days. It’s critical that we keep the pressure on the Legislature. The Senate Third Read floor vote on HB 2439 is expected to be Monday, June 29, 2009. We can’t let this opportunity slip through our fingers!

We urge everyone to continue to contact the Senate and politely urge them to support the current version of HB 2439. A brief personal letter is always best. Below is a cut-and-paste template you may use as an example. Following the template are email address lists of the Senate in both semi-colon and comma separated formats.

Dear Senator,

The Arizona Citizens Defense League has informed me that HB 2439 is scheduled for a Senate Third Read floor vote. I urge you to vote for the passage of HB 2439. The current version of HB 2439 contains language that is very important to me: - It encourages concealed weapons (CCW) permit applications by giving credit for prior training. - It provides greater protection for citizens attempting to comply with weapons misconduct statues clouded by court decisions. - It supports law enforcement by providing harsher penalties for criminals carrying concealed without a permit. - It codifies when the defensive display of a weapon is justified.

Again, I urge you to vote for the passage of HB 2439 in the Senate Third Read floor vote.

In other news, SB 1168, a strike-everything “clone” of the HB 2474 “Parking Lot” bill passed out of the House COW and is headed for House Third Read. Meanwhile, HB 2474 is expected to be debated in the Senate COW on Saturday, June 27, 2009.
