It's no secret that members of the Saudi royal family have provided extensive financial support to al Qaeda. But now, as Eric Lichtblau of the New York Times reports, thousands of pages of previously undisclosed documents provide a detailed look at this disgusting phenomenon.
The documents have been compiled by lawyers for the Sept. 11 families and their insurers who are suing the Saudi government and the individual Saudi princes who personally gave money to Muslim charities they knew would be funding al-Qaeda's jihad against America. Some of the documents are classified American intelligence material that was leaked anonymously to lawyers for the families. Others were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. For example, Treasury Department documents show that a prominent Saudi charity, the International Islamic Relief Organization, heavily supported by members of the Saudi royal family, supported terrorist organizations at least through 2006.
Unfortunately, this material may never find its way into court. That's because the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the victims of 9/11 and their families may not sue either the Saudi government or even the individual princes who gave money to terrorists in their private capacities.

Saudi Royal Family was put on a plane and sent out of America on 9/11 according to President Bush. Are we friends of them? Why Obama being friendly with them is a bad thing but Bush being friendly with them was ok. What am I missing?
This would get tossed on soverign immunity grounds anyway, so why would a U.S. administration take the opposite view - and irritate a key Mideast ally? There’s no gain.
Obama pandering to the Saudis? I await the Michael Moore expose’... There must be one coming, right?

Look at what happened to the Iran hostages when they sought to have damages awarded after winning a judgment against Iran.
first off,assets here would at some point be seized (if found guilty)which means they’d remove them or sell them off before a judge could freeze them.
I don’t know,but i suspect from past stories that other countries might oblige the freeze order which could put them in a difficult spot.
At any rate,there could be a significant dislocation in our markets were they to divest themselves of all things American. I’d guess too that it wouldn’t just be the ones sued but all Saudi investments.
I suspect the issue then is monetary and while i’d love to see them sued into a state of poverty,our own goverment will never allow that to happen.
Can’t a judgement offer legal weight for an eventual settlement. In other words how is this different than Libya’s bombing of two flights (see below).

In 1989, UTA Flight 772 crashed in central Niger en route to Paris from Chad. All 170 passengers and crew were killed. (Click here for a statement of facts.) It came less than a year after the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland which killed 270 people. Crowell & Moring, led by Stuart Newberger, sued Libya and six of its officials pursuant to the “terrorism exception” of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act — a law that strips terrorist states of their immunity from lawsuits.

i’m sure it could in theory work the same way but we were never a big trading partner of libya nor reliant upon them for oil.
