SC: Sanford apologizes to Cabinet, says he won’t quit; He claims he’s been unfaithful just once

Gov. Mark Sanford tried to get back to work Friday, apologizing to his Cabinet, comparing himself to the biblical figure David and retreating to the familiar territory of federal stimulus money and declining state revenue estimates.

Friday’s anything-but-normal Cabinet meeting was Sanford’s first official business since admitting Wednesday to an affair with a woman from Argentina. Sanford also reaffirmed he had no plans to resign and that he had only been unfaithful to his wife, Jenny, once.

Sanford’s denial of other infidelities can after a Web site run by a former Sanford staffer on Friday named two other alleged lovers.

“The governor made it 100 percent clear on Wednesday that this particular relationship is the only time he has been unfaithful to his wife,” said spokesman Joel Sawyer.

It's not like he just had the affair, he's done plenty of other things that mean he needs to go. And who knows what else is going to come out.

The election is next November. I could find some argument of just letting him stay until then...but it basically guarantees a democrat will come up with a “clean” campaign...and likely create a wave. For the sake of the state republicans...if he resigned now...there might be ways that the party could recover by next November.

I don’t think he’s very smart. I would go back and question alot of things that he’s said over the past five years. Would I respect the guy sitting there for 18 more months? No....he’s some guy who really doesn’t know how to handle things or sort things out. Real governors don’t run off to Argentina...they have a local gal who takes care of their needs....ask Bill Clinton about this concept.

this particular relationship is the only time he has been unfaithful to his wife,

To paraphrase Bubba, "It depends om what the meaning of 'once' is." Does Sanford want us to think it means he was unfaithful only once with one woman? Oe does it mean only one woman, but multiple times?

His wife says he begged her to let him be with his Argentinian lover, so he certainly wasn't going to stop at "once."

“...comparing himself to the biblical figure David...”

He is kidding? Comparing himself to King David? He’s kidding, yes?

He is not a truthful man. Not sure why he’s wasting everyone’s time with proclamations of innocence when he’s lost his credibility.

From a pure "executive of the state" point of view, I could care less if he's unfaithful to his spouse, or even if he's how "Janet Reno Got Her Groove Back".

It's the disappearance without notice and possible use of government funds that's the problem. And the fact that he's now acting so very, very weird.

Please do us conservatives and your country a favor Governor, and just walk away from this office that you can't act responsibly with!

What a loathsome piece of excrescence. He begged his wife to let him be with his mistress?? I am sickened. I literally feel nausea upon reading this.

I know what he is suffering now. I know what it’s like to be in complete emotional agony. He deserves every minute of it. He has brought devastation not just upon his family but perhaps upon his country because HE COULDN’T KEEP HIS PENIS IN HIS PANTS.

Leaving the state without a governor is the only reason I need to say he must go.

But the true romance novel press conference was an added touch.

I agree the dude is scary weird, we didn't even need an affair to know that this guy is a whack case.

FTA: “The governor made it 100 percent clear on Wednesday that this particular relationship is the only time he has been unfaithful to his wife,” said spokesman Joel Sawyer.

Translation: he's only had one mistress. One teeny tiny little itsy bitsy mistress. Hard to even call her a mistress, really. More like a friend. Yes, that's it, a friend. A friend with benefits. And who doesn't like friends? Or benefits? You can see the quandary he was in, can't you?. He had to be unfaithful, if you think about it. It would have been rude to say "no".

Governor Sanford is an Grade A Moron if he thinks there is a decent woman alive who'd fall for "she was the only one, baby, I swear." line.

He begged his wife to let him be with his mistress??

Maybe he thought he could have them both. Home cookin’ and outside lovin’, to quote Dean Martin.

I didn’t follow him closely before, and would’ve given him the benefit of the doubt before. But after going AWOL in such a damaging fashion and then holding his strange press conference, he needs to move on.

"Just once. You see, I tried it and I did not like it. After that once, I spent the rest of the five days thinking only of the American people, and crying about how I let you down."

I didn’t know anything about him either, it was what I learned Monday and Tuesday that revealed to me the man is a nutcase.

I didn’t even need Wednesday, fleeing his state and office was enough for me.
