The head of an Anne Arundel County Republican women's group has apologized for a Web posting comparing President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler, after the posting received national attention on blogs and cable television news.
Joyce E. Thomann, president of the Republican Women of Anne Arundel County, wrote in a letter on the group's Web site that "Obama and Hitler have a great deal in common in my view. Obama and Hitler use the 'blitzkrieg' method to overwhelm their enemies. FAST, CARPET BOMBING intent on destruction. Hitler's blitzkrieg bombing destroyed many European cities - quickly and effectively. Obama is systematically destroying the American economy and with it AMERICA."
As criticism of the posting mounted this week, the board of directors of the group denounced Thomann's writings Thursday and two Republican candidates for Annapolis alderman returned her campaign donations. Soon after, Thomann apologized.
In a statement read by her husband, Charles Thomann, a Republican member of the Maryland State Board of Elections, she called her wording a "poor choice."
"I sincerely apologize for any insensitivity I have exhibited by the use of the term 'blitzkrieg' and the name of Adolf Hitler. This wording was a poor choice," the statement said. "I believe President Obama is an honorable man and a dignified public servant and as such he's worthy of our great honor and respect." ...

Ugh. If the GOP really expects to make a comeback (yea right) then it needs to move away from this sort of spinelessness.
* I was born in one country, raised in another. My father was born in
another country. I was not his only child. He fathered several children
with numerous women.
* I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in
me. My mother died at an early age from cancer.
* Later in life, questions arose over my real name.
* My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a
legitimate, reliable birth certificate.
* I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it
was widely accepted in my country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs &
didn’t follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.
* I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult,
disguising myself as someone who really cared about them.
* That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life
and I embarked on a new career.
* I wrote a book about my struggles growing up. It was clear to those
who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father
abandoned me as a child.
* I became active in local politics in my 30’s then with help behind
the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national
office in my 40s. They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone
into anything. That reinforced my conceit.
* I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no
experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker
and citizens were drawn to me as though I were a magnet and they were small
roofing tacks.
* I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances. This
bolstered my ego.
* At first, my political campaign focused on my country’s foreign
policy. I was very critical of my country in the last war and seized every
opportunity to bash my country..
* But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on
the country’s economy. I pretended to have a really good plan on how we
could do better and every poor person would be fed & housed for free.
* I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess.
It was the free market, banks & corporations. I decided to start making
citizens hate them and if they were envious of others who did well, the plan
was clinched tight.
* I called mine “A People’s Campaign” and that sounded good to all
people.
* I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the
traditional path of politics & was able to gain widespread popular support.
* I knew that, if I merely offered the people ‘hope’ , together we
could change our country and the world.
* So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of
the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include “persecuted minorities” like the
Jews. My true views were not widely known & I needed to keep them unknown,
until after I became my nation’s leader.
* I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found
out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined
those people I associated with.
* I’m glad they didn’t. Then I became the most powerful man in the
world. And the world learned the truth.
*Who am I?*
ADOLF HITLER
WHO WERE YOU THINKING OF?
Scary isn’t it? `
It’s really outrageous the way people try to compare Adolph Hitler and Barak 0bama.
Hitler didn’t need a teleprompter.
Yes, the apology was spineless, and the original words were incredibly stupid.
It’s one thing for moronic, anonymous bloggers to demonstrate their stupidity in their blogs, but someone connected to the political process in a very real way should know better.
And isn’t it just wonderful to contemplate that the ‘right’ is able to employ the same tactics so decried on this site when employed by the ‘left’.
BHO actually reminds me more of the Labour PM Clement Atlee who replaced Winston Churchill in 1945. Atlee was a dedicated lifelong socialist. It was his administration which introduced socialized healthcare and nationalized a number of key companies and industries including the Bank of England, the steel industry, the airline industry, the railways and much of the coal and utilities industries. Also, Great Britain ceased being a great power under Atlee’s ruinous socialist policies as well.
BHO’s foreign policy reminds me of another failed British PM, Neville Chamberlain.
I wouldn’t call Obama Hitler, but I am in the process of reading Richard Evans’, The Third Reich in Power, and the similarities between what the National Socialists (NAZI’s) did to German society has many comparisons to what the liberals are doing here.
Can we all just agree to retire the Hitler comparisons? There are many other bloodthirsty tyrants who are feeling left out.
It seems to me that the comparison was "spot dead on the money".
"Hitler didnt need a teleprompter."
Yep! It's hard to distinguish who is worse...oscumbo and his adoring acolytes, or spineless repubs who know the truth in their hearts but are cowards when it comes time to make a stand for that truth.
As it is, in this particular case, she merely skirted around the real truth-issues of the comparisons that can be made.
Hitler didnt need a teleprompter.
Hitler, like Obama, also said well in advance of being elected what he was going to do and people either didn't believe him or didn't care because of his charisma.
True Dat.
Not fair to insult Adolf when he is not here to defend himself and his form of National Socialism.
When? OH! WHEN? Are Republicans going to quit apologizing for pointing our the obvious?
Obozo is using Hitler’s playbook!
And other famous playbooks that have been used to overthrow democratic governments.
No need to apologize — PUBLICIZE FOR ALL YOU ARE WORTH AS TO WHO AND WHAT OBOZO’S THUGOCRACY IS!
The coward apologizes for getting it right. Sheesh. This is a grand example of why the GOP is dead.
