Sitting in Reno, Nevada, at the Conservative Leadership Conference (CLC) two years ago, I was awed by the governor of South Carolina. Here, at last, was someone who got it. Someone who understood the danger of big government and big spending, and that, yes, our civilization was on the line.
Chuck Muth of Citizen Outreach, who hoped to turn the CLC into CPAC West, reminded us that at the first CPAC a future president (Ronald Reagan) spoke and suggested perhaps wed heard one at CLC. He then gave Governor Mark Sanford the Barry Goldwater Award. After the event, I walked over to Governor Sanford, gave him my card, and told him to call if he ever decided to run for president.
After recent events, I dont expect to hear from Governor Sanford. The revelation of his affair with a woman in Argentina is gravely disappointing. Coming as it does on the heels of revelations about Senator John Ensign (R-NV) having an affair, it raises a whole spate of questions.
For years many have insisted these issues of personal character dont matter. We heard that repeatedly during the presidential campaign of Rudy Giuliani. His supporters insisted that the issues in Giulianis life were private.
Of course, its more than a family matter....

Adultery is only part of his problem. Who just takes off like that for tryst? He shows very poor judgment.
i wonder why the talking heads are omiting reference to the guy who cheated on his wiife inthe oval office... hmmm?
IMO, adultary is his problem. The governmental problem is tht he used taxpayer funds to make the trip to his lover.
re: Someone who understood the danger of big government and big spending, and that, yes, our civilization was on the line
And that fact is not reduced one bit by his adultery. Our lives are so much more than a great big, single blob. All my life I’ve heard how a fault such as this indicates a lack of trust in every aspect of the person’s life. I have watched for over 50 years now and I simply have not seen that to be borne out by experience and observation.
I know it’s simplistic, but a car with a flat tire can start very well, can even take you from point A to point B. Is it a problem, you bet, but does it warrant hating the entire car, not hardly.
I do not want to minimize the damage that has been done to his wife and family and the state he represents, but at some point you’ve simply got to realize that as long as your dealing with humans you’re going to be forced to accept the lesser of evils. And which evil that is depends largely on you and how you view life.
To accept that a man has a serious problem but to take advantage of the good that he has to offer does not, IMHO, necessarily mean approving of his wrong doing. Life is never an all or nothing, take it or leave it proposition.
If we ever expect to take back our country we are going to have to find a way to come to grips with our expectations. Perfection is not in the mix.
Wasn’t Giuliani separated and in a a contentious divorce battle before he took up with Judith? (Rudy’s wife refused to allow divorce and dragged it on and on to humiliate him- until she met another man she wanted).
Not “right”. But not like Sanford’s “True Lies” secret life
Giuliani also never failed to perform his public duties, even with a life in personal chaos and cancer to boot.
This is quite different.
He is still a pig and a double pig if he used taxpayer funds for his trip.
Also, everybody knew back even in ‘92 that Bill Clinton was a horndog, and they voted for him anyway.
The governmental problem is that Sanford compromised performing his duties as governor because his johnson took over his logic and reason. Who conspicuously disappears for 5 days like that (over “Father’s day”) with no contact?
"If a man's own wife can't trust him, how can I trust him?"
Somehow Clinton apologists have managed to gloss over that Clinton also compromised performing his public duties (and even US national security interests) because of his johnson.
One good thing aboout Al Gore winning the election would have been theat Tipper would NEVER have welcomed the Clintons back into the White House. Instead the Bush family cleaned up his image by semi-adopting him and giving him high profile ceremonial jobs.
What causes these guys to act so stupidly?? Power? Arrogance?
I hear you there. I would even make the case, that if you cannot get a security clearance, you cannot serve in any of the three branches of the Federal Government.

To hear S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford tell it, the affair with the beautiful Argentinian woman that has him fighting for his political life is the only time he has ever been unfaithful to his wife.
At a tearful press conference earlier this week, Sanford stated definitively that his affair with Maria Belen Chapur was the only time he has strayed from his wife, but multiple sources in and around the state capital of Columbia, S.C. are telling FITS that this is not the case.
Another Other Woman For Sanford?
Yes, I was slumming...they are always good for a laugh ; )
And if you believe that, I've got some swampland in Florida to sell you.
YOUR QUESTION...
What causes these guys to act so stupidly?? Power? Arrogance?
MY CONSPIRACY THEORY...
Ive had this crazy thought in my head since Sanfords confession.
This woman seems VERY sophisticated and well connected.
I would not be surprised if there is someone assigned
to every conservative threat to the Socialist agenda.
Their job is to find where they are morally vulnerable
and take them down.
Isnt this exactly what we have been seeing in the past
few years? Have we learned nothing from Samson & Delilah!
Yes... these are long term dalliances which gives the victim
a false sense of confidence. They are exposed and/or
blackmailed at the discretion of their enemies. It is a
device conservatives wont use. Even “IF” conservatives
tried something like this, the media wouldn refuse to expose
a liberal caught in the same moral deception.

My response to Obama... NO YOU WONT! - NO WE WONT!
at least he’s into WIMMEN(S)!
If he was into male interns and pages, he’d have to run for congress as a democrat!
Yep...once a cheater, always a cheater. I learned that one the hard way.
