Retired Maj. Gen. David Wherley, former commander of the D.C. Army and Air National Guard, and his wife Ann, were among the victims.
Wherley commanded the 113th Wing at Andrews Air Force Base. The couple lived in the Hill East neighborhood and the general could often be seen walking to and from the armory.
He joined the Army reserve as a second lieutenant in 1969. After a brief tour of active duty, he joined the D.C. air guard. According to his National Guard biography, he was deputy operations group commander for fighters in Saudi Arabia. He had logged more than 5,000 hours of flying time and was a graduate of the Fighter Weapons Instructor Course for the F-4.
Wherley was the officer who scrambled fighters into Washingtons skies on the day of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Most of our members have lived in the D.C. area for much of their lives, Wherley said in an interview a few days after the attacks. To be patrolling and looking down on their homes, that has been an emotional moment. - Bill Myers

Oh, ok. You did say that FOX News had reported this news also. One often doesn’t know when it’s his time to be called home, does he.

We sure don’t. Some people may need to do business with God and get ready.

This sad news has an extra edge for me. The planes that
the Gen. ordered into the air on 9/11, made two, low
level passes over my location that day. Low and close,
just a few hundred yards off.
I had never been so proud and appreciative of our
Armed Forces as I was at those moments.
Thanks you General Wherley for your service.
Thanks to all of you serving out there...
Sincerely,
JJ61

that is very beautiful
To think that this man died so violently after living the life he lived is unthinkable and hard to understand.
RIP Sir.

It was an unlikely death for a hero of many fronts.
But...remember...General Patton died in an auto accident.
True he was still in the war zone, but it wasn’t the kind of
death that one would have predicted for him.
