I hope a New Yorker can explain what's going on. It is not clear from the story what led to this mess.

Paterson called a special session. The Repubs, using 2 Dems, had taken over the Dem controlled state Senate and named their own leaders. Dems are taking them to court claiming it’s an illegal act. I didn’t bother reading why Paterson called the session. They’re all nuts so who cares.

It is obvious what is going on. Democratic government of the Democrats, by the Democrats, for the Democrats, and to hell with everybody else.

In other words this is the US Senate lite.

I am not a NYer but here goes...

The Democrats controlled the senate 32 to 30, but then two rats switched sides and the GOP took control, but the Democrats ran out of the senate and refused to recognize the result. In the ensuing weeks, they enticed/threatened a turncoat rat to switch back, and it is now tied 31-31. Legally, the Republicans still control because the prior vote of 32 to 30 switching control still stands. However a quorum of 32 is needed to do business, and Democrats have refused to show up or participate for purposes of making a quorum.

They are hoping with enough chaos, some judge somewhere will invalidate the vote giving power to the Republicans.

New York City should declare independence.

What happened next was equally incredible. With the Democrats in their seats, the Republicans marched in and tried to take the podium. They were rebuffed, so they held a session form the well of the chamber and passed dozens of bills by acclamation. The odd thing was when Republican senators start the session with the pledge of allegiance. The Democrats didn't stand to participate and when one tried to stand, he was pulled down.

The Democrats won't be pushed out of power until they are pushed out of power.

I believe this is a prelude to 2010 where if they lose and cannot steal votes and elections, they will need to be arrested and brought out in plastic handcuffs.
