I went to a prep school where one of my history instructors was quite open about his Marxism. Oddly, he was quite content to allow me to be the right wing foil. He actually was a decent teacher, and unlike some of these types, didn’t take himself too damn seriously (except in his being a jazz-pop music snob).
Most importantly, he actually imparted real history, and let me distinguish what was fact and what was his ideology.
I believe that kind of decent lefty is pretty much gone, now.
