Denying the story is childish and ineffective, at least with me, nobody knew where he was except that he was hiking and what area that was in, the real story is not that he was hiking but that he appears to have abandoned his state office for five days and cut communications with his responsibilities and his Lt. Governor, and even his own staff.

This is the second day of this story breaking out and we still don’t have any thing useful from him to explain what has been going on for the last five days.

Of course, he has political enemies.

Too bad his people, including his wife, did such an horrible job of handling the situation that everyone surely knew would arise under the circumstances.

I can’t imagine this being handled worse, if those political enemies had paid people to do and say what they did.

I know there are people here who don’t want to hear that, and think it’s an attack on Governor Sanford. Nothing could be further from truth where I’m concerned. I’m just giving my honest reaction to events as they unfolded.

This whole mess could have been avoided if he and his people had handled it differently from the beginning. They gave his political enemies the opportunity for their own field day, imo.

Find a map of the Georgia leg of the AT. Notice the distance to South Carolina especially the northern part. Now I'm just a retired citizen. But I can find out real quick if something major is happening in my state and not see it on TV, go on line, or be called and told. It's called the State Emergency Management or in my state TEMA. I get tornado warnings before the weather radio alarm goes off.

I'd say several persons knew his whereabouts down to his planned route. It would be insane to say the governor is hiking the AT between this point and that. Why? Because some TinFoil Kook or worse would just have to go see for themselves.

There is a huge pager network operating out of Chattanooga. The best in the region. The towers hit from Atlanta to Abingdon, VA. It is about the most reliable system around due to the frequency band it uses. LEO's use it as do search and rescue. There are more ways to communicate in this area than most persons would ever need. BTW weren't you the poster coming after me on another thread? Walmart related wasn't it?

This is incredible, you keep weaving personal narratives and ignoring the news and the focus of the responses to you.

Here is today’s Wall Street Journal reporting that he was clearly out of touch, if anyone could have reached him then he would not have allowed this devastating story to first fester among state officials over the weekend and then run publicly for two days this week. He has still not offered any clarification.

“COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford called his chief of staff Tuesday morning to check in after an unexpected five-day absence, and was surprised to learn that his disappearance was garnering significant attention, his spokesman said.”

“South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Chief Reggie Lloyd, who oversees the governor’s security, raised alarms with high-ranking elected officials over the weekend about the governor’s absence, according to people familiar with the situation.”

I'm using common sense. There are a lot of Henny Penny posters who think nothing can be done about anything unless the governor is at his desk. The national guards for example can be activated by him that is true. So can a few others both in state and federal level offices besides him. NG's are actually federal troops under the U.S. Department of the Army.

His secluded vacation was not out of character for him nor was it unprecidented. Meaning it was a routine he followed and had done so before. One thing is for sure this smoked out who his political enemies are even within his own party. The LT Governor as well will likely not see election to a higher office.

It reminds me of when the Russian sub the Kursk sank. I kid you not one poster swore we sank it and that one of our subs was damaged because it had not surfaced or went into a port. Nevermind the fact deployed subs generally maintain radio silence and even Russia said there was no collision. To some the simple truth is much harder to believe and accept. Perhaps maybe it's because the truth is boring and TinFoil is exciting?

Like I said, long meaningless narratives of your own theories and wishes, while ignoring the news and facts at hand and more importantly the actual political story.

Sanford hadn't been at work for several days and his office hadn't been in touch with him. Lawmakers and his wife said Monday they didn't know where he was, leading critics to question who was in charge of South Carolina.

They must have some incredibly stupid lawmakers in south Carolina. If the Governor's not in when needed, the Lieutenant governor is in charge.

There is no political story except one for gullible Morons who think one mans absence means things stand still or can't be handled. A man took a long weekend off and went hiking. This week end I'd say quite a few politician's did the same thing in some form or another from local county officals to federal level.

Our nations government and state governments were set up to function despite any one persons absence. Ones absence as such doesn't require a transfer of power. If that were the case nobody could keep up with it. Only in this past century has even same day communication between most persons been available. More to the point many persons still had no phones in the 1950's. WE SURVIVED! If Sanford was deep in the Amazon Rain Forest I can see it being an issue. In all likelihood he was less than 75 miles from the state line and if it came right down to it reachable in a reasonable amount of time.

If you think any man or person is so important and indispensable that they can't be done without and bring the state or nation to a halt then I suggest you stick your hand in a bucket of water and then pull it back out. Notice how quick the water fills in where the hand once was.

This story is media hype and nothing more.

Again, just a long meaningless narrative about nothing, it sure doesn’t explain why Tuesday has now passed and we still have not heard a defense from the Governor, or why his wife had still not heard from him as of this afternoon.

This story has not improved since it reached the public yesterday, he better do a heck of a job when he finally makes his appearance on Wednesday.

You’re making a fool of yourself. Mr Sawyer his spokesman said Monday he could reach the governor if needed. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124577221733942191.html

"the real story is not that he was hiking but that he appears to have abandoned his state office for five days and cut communications with his responsibilities and his Lt. Governor, and even his own staff"

Exactly.

Heck how hard would it be to say: "Going hiking over the weekend, back next week. You have the con. If I don't return, avenge my death"

can’t carry a gun in those parks

Who says you can’t? ;) Little Cobra derringer fits nicely on my pack strap....the AT is a pretty safe place...except for pretty young things hiking alone...and that’s quite rare....Hope all is well with your family!

To not have done that shows a flaw and in an era of terrorism, it is a mistake that will hurt him.

Look you can bet his enemies knew where he was. You can be the LT governor by mid Monday likely before that knew as well as his security. Why? Because it takes a Passport to travel out of country. Those records are accessable to government agencies. Thus the reason nobody went looking for him. They knew. They may have even known Thursday night. That likely makes them liars as well for pretending they didn't. Their stories weren't adding up either and that compounded the issue.

I posted this on another thread. If Sanford had been hiking then fine. He wasn't it seems and now it is a state of South Carolina issue to deal with. I doubt he'll be removed from office that would start scandals & neither party wants their members dirty laundry aired. His federal political career is about like Newt's.

In the mean time while The Dems and RINO's have been playing up the Sanford story what all has gone on elsewhere? A King Autoworker crowned for one.

I didn't know much about Sanford before this happened. I was neutral politically about him and didn't follow him that close. I'll wait till 2011 to start thinking about anyones serious POTUS potentials. I wish the MSM and people would do the same and restore some measure of sanity to our electorial process. Hearing about so and so's possible run and I mean anyones gets old.
