WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama is set to sign into law an anti-smoking bill that will give the Food and Drug Administration unprecedented authority to regulate tobacco.
Obama is scheduled to sign the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act during an event Monday in the Rose Garden. The law allows the FDA to reduce nicotine in tobacco products, ban candy flavorings and block labels such "low tar" and "light." Tobacco companies also will be required to cover their cartons with large graphic warnings.

It’s a poor law. The states should heavily regulate tobacco.

"The law gives the Food and Drug Administration sweeping new power to regulate tobacco, including the authority to reduce nicotine in tobacco products, ban candy flavorings and block labels such "low tar" and "light." Tobacco companies also will be required to cover their cartons with large graphic warnings.
Former president George W. Bush opposed the measure and threatened to veto it, but the legislation has gotten strong support from the current occupant of the White House, who has been very public about his struggles to break a smoking habit.

This is so that Americans can spend more on taxes rather than on cigarettes.

States rights don't seem to exist with 0bama.
No wonder so many are trying to break away from the marxism/communism of the feds AKA=0bama.

How’s that Obama thing working out for all of you smokers? I’m sure you’ll be paying a lot more for your habit shortly. You can thank the guy you voted into office.

At least on this issue, it is working out about the same as it would have had Obama lost. McCain, who voted for this bill and has a long record as a leading nanny stater on this issue, was just as bad.

Actually, the ones I was directing my original post to probably aren't smart enough to go onto free republic.

Well, you got me on that one. People ask me who I voted for in the last election, I like to tell them Sarah Palin.

who has been very public about his struggles to break a smoking habit. Guess what Obama, if you really wanted to, you would quit.
I can say this because I quit 2 1/2 years ago after smoking nearly 3 packs a day for 30 years! All it takes is desire, the patch, and Wellbutin. JMO and what worked for me :)
