You obviously weren't around in the 70's when is started. There's ALWAYS been something wrong with it.
From someone who's been an adult since back in the '60s, I saw trouble brewing from this movement. My first observation was that women who bought into NOW (National Organization for Women) gradually began taking needed jobs from men. From there we watched as women, including married women with children, were encouraged to educate themselves and become "career women". Not much, if any value was attached to a mother staying home and caring for her children, even infants.
When married women were able to bring home a very nice salary, they no longer were dependent on their husbands. As a result, his role as dad greatly changed.
The number of divorces skyrocked to about 50%, many children no longer live in a home with a mother and father, and many are forced to live, or spend time with, a parent and their significant other, like it or not.
I believe NOW and other organizations like it contributed greatly to these destructive results.
