Obama Erases Pro-Democracy Money for Iran By: Kenneth R. Timmerman Newsmax Friday, June 19, 2009Need I remind readers that Obama recently pledged $900 million in assistance to Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip?Newsmax has learned that the Obama administration also has zeroed out funding for pro-democracy programs inside Iran from the State Department budget for fiscal 2010, just as protests in Iran are ramping up.
Funding for pro-democracy programs began in 2004, when Congress earmarked $1.5 million of the State Department budget for educational, humanitarian, and non-governmental organizations and individuals inside Iran to support the advancement of democracy and human rights in Iran.
The funding ramped up dramatically two years later, when Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice requested $75 million for pro-democracy programs. More than half of the $66.1 million Congress finally appropriated went to expand U.S. government-funded Persian language broadcasting services at Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
But no money has been earmarked for such programs in the administrations fiscal 2010 foreign operations budget request. Congressional sources told Newsmax they doubted that a Democrat-controlled Congress would add it when the budget comes before a committee next week.
It would be as if President Reagan had terminated support to democracy activists behind the Iron Curtain in the 1980's and handed it over to the secret police who were enslaving the nations of Eastern Europe.

Well of course he cut funding.
We wouldn’t want to give the false implication that we favor democracy over tyranny.
After all we’re the world’s leader in the race to ‘change’ from democracy to tyranny.
He is a sorry bastard...literally.
George Bush's legacy and fight endures in the Mid East, despite, and in spite of Obama, and THAT is Obama's real dilema.
It was George Bush's policy of direct engagement and support of liberty that has led to the people of Iran seeing the measure of freedom now established on both sides of them in Iraq and Afghjanistan...and desiring it for themselves.
Obama cannot possibly go too far in recognizing that, or he absolutely repudiates himself and his entire foreign policy.
...but the fight in Iran is far from over, and is getting brutal.

Obama’s hands are stained with the blood of innocent Iranian men and women begging for justice and freedom.
You’re right. With all the evidence, there’s are those still trying to piss down my leg and tell me it’s raining.
The Left doesn’t support democracy. It gets in the way of central planning, and their own egos. They don’t support freedom, either, but we all know that.
Democracy or Tyranny? Hmmm?
I think the reason TOTUS is keeping low as much as possible about the revolution in Iran is because he doesn't want to be seen as a hypocrite when he employs the same strong-armed tactics on us.
Only a Muslim in the White House would do this...
Don't forget that he's also bought and paid for by the Saudi royal family and George Soros. Do you think that the Saudis want a democratic Iran across the Persian Gulf? No chance. That's a threat to their own absolute power.
why do people keep forgeting his middle name is HUSSEIN!!!!!!!!!!
President Obama is just very concerned with the ballooning federal budget deficit. :P
Um, do you think they want a nuclear armed Iran any more then we do?
