I don’t think so....it is next to Yellowstone Park in the Southwest isn’t it. My great Uncle backpacked the Bob Marshall also....when he was about 75 years old and a 3 pack a day smoker.....

Make that the North West corner of Montana - a long, long way from Yellowstone (I’ve been on fires in both places).

Amazing how long the studies and work have taken.

And another interesting bit followed what you copied from the EPA site:

While in operation, the Libby mine may have produced 80% of the world's supply of vermiculite. Vermiculite has been used in building insulation and as a soil conditioner. Unfortunately, the vermiculite from the Libby mine was contaminated with a toxic form of naturally-occurring asbestos called tremolite-actinolite asbestiform mineral fibers.

That being said - one also has to ponder on the dangers of asbestos in general.. and the many law school grads who have made personal fortunes off of asbestos lawsuits.

What I always wonder in such cases as this - did the mining company that shut down in 1990 not know that all that vermiculite also had this apparently "bad" form of asbestos? If they did know, then exactly why did they not do anything about it at the time?

Libby has long been a case study for asbestos exposure. Nothing really new here.

Does the timing seem strange to you? I don't know all the particulars, so I'm just asking in reference to the 10th amendment stuff going on.

Have done similar myself. Only advantage I have is at my age I can blame it on a ‘Senior Moment’! I tell my kids there are some advantages to getting older.

Your great uncle 75 years young and backpacking the Bob Marshall!! Must have been in good shape. I packed it in the early 70’s when I was in my mid 20’s and it about wore me out. Woke up on the 4th of July in the Bob to a frozen canteen!

Perhaps...perhaps....but even if you knew nothing about asbestos and mesothelioma you could read the article and see that the area was already a Superfund site.

Why they classified it a public health emergency now instead of 20 years ago is a good question, howerver.

Libby could not be any further from Yellowstone, unless it was Yaak, Montana.

Libby is approximately 33 miles from the Montana, Idaho Panhandle border.
