For one thing, he voluntarily announced it himself. It would be a bigger deal if he had been outed by the newsmedia. Or if he was nationally known.

AFTER he was threatened with blackmail from his former lover. I doubt he would have confessed otherwise.

It’s all about how the news breaks.
If the media exposed him, they would turn it into a feeding frenzy.
Since he exposed himself, it sets a totally different tone, one the media cannot exploit that sensationally or for that long.
