Maoist rebels in India are rapidly expanding their insurgency and could move from remote rural areas to cities.... The rebels are estimated to have 22,000 fighters, and have spread to more than 180 of the country's 630 districts from just 56 in 2001, government and independent data says.
"They have a very comprehensive plan to spread their tentacles into other parts of the country, including urban areas," M.L. Kumawat, special secretary (Internal Security) told Reuters...
"We now need highly specialised forces to deal with the sophisticated weapons they have. Our police forces will be capable, I cannot say they are capable to deal with them now."
Equipped with automatic weapons, shoulder rocket launchers, mines and explosives, the Maoists want to cripple economic activity. Last year they carried out at least 1,000 attacks, but most of these were in remote jungles and villages. ....
The Maoists have killed police and politicians, and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since the 1960s.
But some recent attacks have been carried out closer to cities, and one such attack in Nayagarh, just 87 km (54 miles) from the state capital of mineral-rich Orissa, showed that they were moving closer. Similar attacks have taken place in towns in West Bengal state.
Kumawat said interrogation of Maoist leaders, recently arrested from cities like Bangalore and the state of Haryana, revealed their urban plans.
"Right now they may not be violent in these areas, but their presence cannot be ruled out ... the Naxal (Maoists) problem is not confined to one or two states anymore."
They are also in touch with other militant groups operating in Kashmir and the northeast, Kumawat said. "They are supporting other extremist groups in Jammu and Kashmir, and have linkages with northeastern militant groups."

"His release was ordered by the courts and he left for New Delhi over the weekend to take oath as an MP," police official Vikas Vaibhav told AFP. "He is still a dreaded Maoist, feared by many."
Maoist rebels in India?
Certain amount of comic irony in that.
As I recall, Maoist rebels got their start in China.
China is the second largest economy in the world, and it’s the fastest growing major economy in the world.
So, India’s Maoist rebels are murdering policemen because the rebels want...faster economic growth?
Bump. Thanks for posting.
The Indians have always managed to deal with the Naxalites but never put them away for good.
Like swatting mosquitoes.
But, this like one of your other postings about a massacre of cops in Maharashtra, shows that the threat is increasing.
They’re partnering with Islami jihadis(!), man, strange bedfellows, indeed.
They’re to some extent behind antiChristian violence that they perpetuate under the guise of being Hindus causing reprisals and further violence.
Hope the Indians can get a handle on this before it spirals out of control.
"He (Madni) revealed that the LeT was acting in coordination with CPI (Maoists) in Jharkhand. He has acted as conduit for LeT and provided training to recruits in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and sent them to India to carry out terror strikes," the public prosecutor told the court which extended the police remand of Madni for seven days.
Delhi Police, who are interrogating Madni, contended that his custodial quizzing was necessary to ascertain his emails details and bank account which revealed transactions to the tune of Rs 25 lakh.
Metropolitan Magistrate Manish Yaduvanshi allowed the plea of the police, which has arrested the militant under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
50-year-old Madni, a resident of Bihar who acquired Nepalese citizenship, was arrested on June four from near Qutub Minar area in South Delhi and produced before the court after the completion of 14 days police custody.
Thanks.
Does show the Pakistanis are upto their tricks again. And the CPI shows their utter disdain for their own country.
Commies and Jihadis, oh my!
Time for India’s CI forces to gain some more experience.
