You are right. In the 19 paragraph article on MSNBC.com, the word Democrat does not appear one time. Only Conyers' brief "D", behind his name, is the only allusion to his party identification. His wife's party ID is not mentioned at all.
If you read the AP element’s of style - Republican belongs in any derogatory headline and D is appropriate as long as it comes in or after the third paragraph.
There is no need to identify Detroit politicians with their party.
