The mistake was not keeping her under control. once she had the knife they didnt have much choice.

Right. And it is a very important distiction. Had a big flame war the other day with someone that did not grasp that distinction. The cops screwed up. The point where they screwed up was not from the time she refused to drop the knife until the time she was dead. (assuming they had no Tazers) However, even though that was not the time of the mistake that does not mean they did not make mistakes.

The problem or mistake is not the officers, it's the law in general and the law in regards to the mentally ill in particular.
